Not knowing how they did it back then, but my L3130GST with power steering uses the power steering section of the hydraulic pump to power the steering and the GST transmission shifting.
Good idea to get a service manual so you can trace the hydraulic circuit and the GST pressure regulating valve.
The parts breakdown shows the L2850GST has a dry plate main clutch with wet shuttle clutches and that power steering was an option but the GST requires a dedicated regulated hydraulic flow usually from the steering side of the hydraulic pump, so transmission and steering problems may be connected.
Make sure you have the correct KUBOTA filters on the transmission circuit as there is usually not a proper cross for many Kubota transmission filters and Kubota Super UDT is usually required in the GST transmission for proper shifting fork/valve body action and for the wet shuttle clutches to function properly.
