I was trying out an L2900 yesterday. Most of the controls were easy to figure out, but the 4x4 shifter must have a trick. At first I was able to move the 4x4 control leveler in and out but it seems hard to move, then it seemed stuck.

The tractor only has 200 hours so it seems hard to believe the 4x4 would be broken.

Is there are trick or procedure on how to shift this? I tried with both the control on the column and the one the right of the seat with the H-N-L positions in neutral.

I also tried to lift the font wheels off the ground by pushing the FEL down. It did not lift the wheels off the ground. Is that normal for this model or is that a sign of a problem?

Thank for any advice.
Rich

The four wheel drive lever might move differently if you have the wind up between the rear and the front axle. You can remove it by picking the front axle with the loader and with many tractors you have to be sure that you don't have the tractor in gear to do it.
That sure is low houred for a tractor that model. I'd check the lubrication points on everything to be sure it might not have been neglected to much!

My L2900 is the same way. It slips into 4WD easily but I'm not able to disengage the 4WD if I'm moving forward. If I stop or back up slightly it shifts just fine.

As far as the FEL lifting the front tires of the ground, there should be plenty of down pressure to do this. Are you sure you didn't push the lever past the "down" position and into the "float" position?

Just curious, what year is it and what are they asking for a L2900 with only 200 hrs on it? I paid just over 10K for mine with 1000hrs. and absolutely love it.

The manual on my L4400 recommends turning the steering wheel left or right if it is hard to shift the 4wd lever. Works everytime. But yes, there are times when it is a hard to shift and other times smooth as butter.

I don't know how your tractor is set up but with the hesston we use, if you pull gently on the lever while turning the wheel left and right as you drive forward, when it gets to that sweet spot it will just slide up and out of gear.

As for the FEL not lifting the tractor, if the cyclinders have plenty of travel, you may have to rev up to get enough ommph, or if they don't have enough travel, curl the bucket fully down where its mouth is facing straight down an press downward. That can sometimes give enough room to move.
