OK this is probably a stupid question, but.... What is the method for determining at what RPM one should be running at?

A little background. I have a new L3010 with loader and I am trying to level off some loads of black dirt. This is working great except a couple of times I have almost stalled the tractor. I was running at only 1500 RPM's. So I bumped it up to 2000 RPM's but am worried I may be damaging the tracter expecially since it is new. Any words of wisdom?

Thanks,

Dennis

Dennis,

I am no expert, but my method of determining the correct RPM is about what you did; I use the minimum required without "laboring" the engine. IOW, if 1500 seems like you're starting to lug, bump it up a little.

On the contrary, I believe that too low an RPM is possibly as damaging as too high. You want it "just right".

I have the L3410 and when using the FEL I run about 2000 RPM, if just floating in reverese to level things out I'll back it down a bit, but I feel that running the diesel to the point of lugging is not good for it. Like you I'm new to all of this and learning as I go.

Dennis, basically, don't lug it, and beyond that don't worry about it. My manual, as with most I think, says to not run it at "full speed" the first 50 hours. However, diesel tractors are made to run at PTO speed (which is only a couple hundred RPM below full throttle) all day. Of course, if you're not using a PTO powered implement that needs the higher RPM, you're just wasting a little fuel and have more noise than needed. So, if I'm using a PTO powered implement, I run it at PTO speed, whether for a few minutes or several hours. If not, I usually run mine at 1700-2200 RPM. And if I go down the road, I just shove the throttle to the governor./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

As usual thanks for all the advice. I pretty much thought that, but just wanted to make sure I was ok. All I am doing is using the FEL to move some dirt. Seems like 2000 RPM is working fine. P.S. Thank You TIM ALDERMAN for talking me into the HST. I luv it!
