I agree with David. I have an L3400 which is 5ft wide and I have a 5ft cutter.
My cutter just covers my tracks and I would prefer it to overhang as a 6fter would have done.
A 5ft on a L3240 will be smaller than the rear. You should be able to do a 6 footer light/medium duty no problem. If the grass is heavy, back off a bit or cut in smaller swaths than 6 ft.
I haven't made the purchase yet, but when I do it will be with the 724 loader.
I am confussed when I see that some of you have the 3240 with a 5' cutter.... and have yet to see someone post that they have a 6' cutter...is that because those with a 5' cutter have R1 tires?
PSDStu-
I think you are correct about the tire/cutter combination. I have R1s and the 5 foot cutter covers the tracks nicely whereas Davitk's R4 setup appears to need the 6 foot cutter. Now you've got me curious - I'll have to go out and measure my sidewall to sidewall width when I get back to the promised land to see what width the wheels are mounted.
Sorry for the delay - I checked when I got home last night. Outside to outside is 62" on my L3240 with R1s. It looks like they could be set 2 or maybe even 4 inches narrower, based on the clearance between static and rotating hardware. The mounting arrangement may not allow this - I didn't really study the alternate arrangements to see how they would alter the track. I would have to dismount the wheels and monkey around with wheel stagger, which I don't really want to do very often. I seem to remember this is covered in the owner's manual, too.
The set up seems to work fine with my 60" brush hog, and I would rather go to a wider track than narrower, given an excuse. Future jobs will involve working on slopes in the woods, so stability is a big concern for me. I guess if you can afford the 6' cutter, live with the movement of your mass center aft by another 6" or so and can carry the added weight, then you could also adjust your track wider and keep it that way. Actually, that sounds pretty good to me.
Thanks for bringing this up as I just realized that I need to figure out where I am at now and how much wider/narrower I can go. Which brings up the other issue - I need a decent jack & jack stands for the height & weight of a tractor vs a car.
