Looking at purchasing a new L3240. Does anyone use Bush Hog 285 rotary cutter? Was looking at the SQ160, but really would like the 285. Thanks for any help.

Don't know about the 285, but I have been using a 286 and have been quite happy with it. I believe the 28* series are better built then the SQ's. Just make sure you have enough hp to run it. Bush Hog has the power requirements on their web site. Hope this helps.

I've got a 286, they are really tough mowers, in my opinion BH under rates their mowers because the 280's are as heavy as most HD cutters. I would go with a 280 over an SQ any day. You should have plenty of HP, just make sure you have enough tractor to lift it. Which you should, you just might need weights (or an FEL) to keep the front wheels from getting light.

Another thing to consider when looking at BH, as far a cutting capacity goes. BH rates their mowers on a continuous cut (cutting multiple stems at the same time) but other manufacturers like JD rate theirs on single cut (one stem at a time). That's the main reason a BH medium cutter is just as heavy as a JD HD cutter.
