Kubota L 3301
I looked at a used L3240DT tracer with a LA724 loader on it. It is a 2012 and has 260 hrs on it. It has R 4 tires loaded and has rear remotes on it. Dealer is asking 19,900 for it but said I could get it for around 18000. Is this a good price? I went to the build site and a new one is not that much more. What would be the difference between the 2012 engines and the 2015 engines. I would like to stay clear of the tier 4 engine. Thanks

The 2015 equivalent is definitely a tier 4 with particulate filter and EGR. It's always hard to buy a barely used Kubota for a couple of reasons. They almost always offer 0% financing on new tractors, and they do not rapidly depreciate like some other lesser popular brands. In my opinion, it is worth it as a new equivalent model will be at least $5k more due to emissions equipment, 260 hours is barely broken in, and also the pre-tier 4 final 40 series are in higher demand since being discontinued.

My only complaint about my 3240 2wd is that it is slightly underpowered for its size/weight. It needs a 6ft cutter to cover the rear tracks, but only enough power for a 5ft in my cutting conditions, etc.

As a L3400 owner, I would be happy with a L3240... I miss (not greatly, but still I thought some features the Grand series has were handy) not having many of the Grand L features, and I think the L3240 is the right size for a lot of jobs. If the one you're looking at is clean, HST, and has the SSQA loader bucket, I would think the price is fair. Your needs for a tractor would determine whether or not it would be a good match. PoorPlowboy's observations are dead-on, although I wonder if $5K is a bit high for the additional emissions gear??

Thanks for the replys. I have a 32 HP now and it does everything I have wanted to do so far. I have 80 acres and all is woods. I use the tractor for fire wood, food plots and snowplowing. I also use it for the garden. All of my attachments are 5 foot wide except the snow blower so this size tractor would work. This tractor has has the shuttle shift which is what I wanted. I am not sure if I would like the HST transmission but that would not stop me from buying one. What would some of the pros and cons of the shuttle VS HSt transmission be. A new tractor in this size using the build site would cost 24800 and that does not include the tires being weighted. I am sure there are rebates and maybe some dealer discounts. I don't know much about the tier 4 engines but I would rather not have one, but this could change also. Again thanks for anyones help Ivan

Kubota's shuttles are good, Kubota's Hydrostat's are even better. Top of the line design, and industry leader in the hydrostatic transmission department.

Hydro vs shuttle.. Well, it depends on what you want to do with the tractor. This is why they still make both types. If you are doing loader and blade work, you will appreciate the hydro. If you doing field work, you will appreciate the advantages of the shuttle. The shuttle will put a little more horsepower to the ground, but the Hydro will allow precise control that you cannot achieve with the shuttle. With the hydro you have infinite control of speed, and near instantaneous directional changes. You really appreciate a hydro when you are using a set of forks loading a pallet into the bed of your$ 40,000 pickup truck. The learning curve of tractor operation is much faster with a hydro machine. Most people can operate a hydro machine with greater control and accuracy more rapidly without the longer learning curve of becoming skilled with a geared machine. Certain grading operations and certain pulling conditions cannot be effectivly duplicated on a geared machine with a lot of skill and practice and wear and tear on the clutch. If you want to see how slow you can go on a hydro machine:

James is accurate, in my experience, about the shuttle/HST trade offs. My first tractor was a crash box gear drive, and although I had no issues with it, and it was likely approaching 30 years old, but only 680 hours, I could imagine the clutch being the first thing that would require service. I did a lot of back and forth loader work, and shifting back and forth got old. The Grand L Kubotas, with their auto throttle features, are sooo easy to use with the HST. If you are plowing or bush hogging, then the shuttle would be okay, I think, but I have never used one.
