Kubota L3400
OK, 1st post.

I thought I had my mind made up to get a new JD790 in April/May of this year. My uncle bought one this August & LOVES it. I thought that it would be wise to get the same tractor so that we could share attachments, backhoe, forks, etc.. Until I saw the Kubota L3400.

The Kubota has more HP, plus more TPH lift capacity, and seems to have more lift cpacity than the 790 on the FEL.

I also like the feature that allows you to go from forward to reverse with the shuttle shifter. With the John Deere, 1st & reverse are across from each other.

On the 3400, can you have the tractor in any gear & keep going from Forward Low to Reverse? Yes, I understand that the tractor has to be stopped 1st.

For those with a L3400, & FEL, what did you pay for the combo?
Manual tranny of course.

I did tons of research and I ended up with the L3400 because it just outclasses the JD 790 in my opinion. It has several more HP, a lot more lifting capacity front and rear and more reverse gears if that matters to you. Besides, getting it with a 463 FEL package and a rear work light for $ 14,700, to me was a great price. I have a farm tax #, so I didn't have to pay any sales tax.

If you buy before end of year, Kubota revolving credit is running $ 500 instant rebate, 180 days no payment, no interest and no down payment. That is what I did, so I will end up getting it for $ 14200 as Kubota has already credit my account the $ 500 the same day I purchased it. I will wait until about 170 days and pay it off. This way I use it for 6 months for free and get another $ 500 off.

I won't go out on a limb and say Kubota is the best compact tractor, but I have yet to find any better! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: shifting...sure, you can simply stop and then shift from L to R or H -- leave the gear-stick alone if you wish. You have to be stopped as you said.

I could not find a better built machine for the price, or more hp for the money than in my L3400 when I was looking.

Thanks guys.

I have 135 acres that I bought this spring, so a bare-bones tractor is all I can afford. I think the L3400 is the one I want, and from the prices that I am hearing from you, I think it's right on par with the JD.

I can't swing it until springtime, although I would love to now. Even if I can't get the $500.00 rebate, the normal Kubota finance rates aren't too bad either. They sure do beat personal loan rates.

135 acres?? Are you going to be leaving the tractor on this land? If so, look at the M4800 2wd. A lot more tractor for that size of property and only about 2k more in price.

4wd is a must. It is not very flat. Yes, I'll keep it here most of the time, but I already have a 20' dove tail trailer with brakes that I bought a year ago anticipating the day when I would actually have a tractor to put on it! Also have a 3/4 ton HD truck.

My initial thoughts on the JD 790 was that I might want something a little bigger, but couldn't get into the 990's price. The 3400 will hopefully be priced closer to the 790 side, but more tractor.

Also noteworthy, I will not have to mow anything. The tractor will primarilly be used for light logging, firewood & snow plowing.

Can anyone tell me if the L3400 has remote hydraulics? I can't find it on the Kubota web site.

If you buy it with a L463 loader package, they install the hydraulics for the loader on the tractor and they stay with the tractor even when the loader is quick dettatched.

As far as ones on the rear, they do not come stanard but you can detatch the loader in about a minute and use the ones for the loader as long as you have some 4' or 5' hoses made to connect implement hose to the loader hydraulics.

You can also add the remotes for the back, for my 3830 they were about 1400.00 for all three....

When I last talked with a dealer about the 3400, the sales guy said there was only one loader available. Not sure of the number, though. It also only came with a non QA bucket. Is this accurate in everyone's experience? Are aftermarket loaders perhaps a better choice? Any particular brand?
