L3400 vs. L3240

I must admit that when it comes to tractors, I know very little. The little that I do know comes from the research that I have done over the past couple months in searching for a new tractor and from being an errand boy at a Kubota dealership when I was in high school. I thought that I had made up my mind on which tractor to buy and then I began to read a lot of negative stuff about the L3400, especially dealing with the pto and the jerky 3 pt. hitch. I guess I have two questions. First, are the pto problems a common problem or is it just that those who have had the problems with these are the most vocal on this site? Second, are these same problems evident on the grand series or just on the basic L? My chief uses for my pto are going to be brush hogging a field and using a tiller in a garden. Seems like some who have had the problem with the pto have also done a decent amount of tilling. Any help on this question is greatly appreciated.

My BIL has a 3400 that I used extensively before I bought my 3240.
I saw no flaws in the 3400...
until I bought my 3240.

The 3400 is a smaller, lighter tractor if that matters to you and he has had trouble with his PTO and the jerky TPH is, IMO, a piece of junk. Fine dirt work with a box blade was next to impossible. At least it was for me.

I'm really glad I went for the Grand L. While the 3240 continually amazes me with what it will do, my only regret now is that for my uses, I wish I had gotten a 5740.

'07 l3400 here, 200 hrs., with no jerkiness (that I can tell) or pto problems. Actually, no problems at all.
