I had narrowed the seach to a gear L3400 based primarily on pto hp for chipper work.

For another $3000, the price of a chipper, the dealer has a mid 300 hour '04 TC33DA, 14la w/qa bucket, HST, and a backhoe. I don't really need a hoe now but know they become useful. The TC owner moved up and the 33 is in good condition.

Are the 33's overall benefits worth the extra bucks and losing the slightly higher hp of the 3400?

Thanks for your ideas,
Cal

PS I would kill for a backhoe. Now, is it a 3 PH or subframe BH?

For $3,000 more & all the extras you will be getting, definitely go for the TC33DA. See if you can deal for the tractor without the BH. If its a package deal, you can always sell the BH later if you find that it is collecting dust.

The TC33DA has approx 200 lbs better lift capacity on the 3pt. hitch. Could not find which tractor is heavier. Except for transmission, both of these tractors are very comparable in most other specs. As far as I am concerned, you can't beat the hydrostat on the TC33DA. Much easier to operate the tractor leaving you more focus at the job at hand.

Nothing wrong with the Kubota...is also a very good tractor....just getting more bang for your buck with the NH in my opinion.

I also would maim for a BH.

The HST would cost you extra on an L3400 and would be worth it IMHO. Also the seat is much more comfortable on the TC33DA.

if you go for the back hoe stick with subframe --stay far away from 3pts

The BH is a Brush Hog BH750, I am assuming on the 3pt hitch. If I was mowing or loading, the HST and other features would be very important. Other than the ride into the woods, I am going to be on the ground stuffing the chipper. After a few hours of that any seat will feel great.

There is a BH750 on ebay starting at $5800 but no bids. So if it only costs me $3000 more, hopefully I could sell it for $4000 and get the chipper I want.

Selling it on Ebay is a good thing. Go for it! But you can also use it for awhile (becareful with a 3ph BH, use common sense) and then sell it.

b33b:

Welcome to TBN :D!. My first tractor was geared my second was HST. I prefer HST. Unless you anticipate using heavy duty ground engaging attachments (i.e. plow, etc.) I would go HST. Jay

How ironic life is. I have the Kubota handle, and am about to tell you that the TC33 is a way better deal. I agree w/ Jay that the hydro is the only way to go. Also, I wouldn't kill for a backhoe, but may seriously injure. :D

Best of luck on your decision.

b33b: You are "rolling the dice" with that 3 point backhoe, and may want to check the casing around clutch/HST area for cracks. I would never buy a 3 point backhoe, they abuse the tractor and some tractors have split in half! That maybe the reason it is for sale with such few hours? Do a search on TBN for opinions of 3 point backhoes, before you make your final decision. Instead of getting a good deal; it may end up costing a couple thousand in future repairs also!!
