Would love to have a tractor but dont have the cash for something nice. I came across an ad and the owner says "2nd gear is bad". He wants $4500 including a L1720 loader. Dont know the hours but it has been kept outside and looks pretty beat. Pics are attached.

Can I resonably use this around my property for landscaping work without second gear? Any idea what it takes to repair?

What do you think of the price? Any advice is appreciated!

I had a 245DT, you NEED 2nd gear.
No idea on cost.

I own a l-305 the 3 cyl version with the same bucket plus a back hoe it is a great machine.when I run empty I use high 3rd gear.when diging into a pile I use low 1st gear. you could use high 1st to mimic 2nd gear.make sure reverse works as I think it is the same as 2nd. I would say buy it for 3000.00 or 3500.00. use it while you search for a way to fix it. the bucket will lift a large round bale over 1500 lbs.it will lift over 8 feet.

...the owner says "2nd gear is bad"....
That *might* be the only thing he'll admit is bad in the ad... "Buyer beware" Might be worth a look if you are really good at fixing this kind of stuff.

The best stuff that I buy off Craig's list, still needs way, way more work then the seller ever leads on to. If I didn't weld, I would have be screwed a couple of times. That's a bunch of money... test out the tractor a whole bunch before you commit - If you don't know what to look at, take someone knowledgeable along with you. I personally would walk away from this one, looks pretty rough to me.

Keep looking, that thing will be a money pit! You can find better for the same or a little more money.

It turns out the current owner has only owned for 4 months so he has no history. The hour meter is broken and the front pump is shot so the loader is not operable. He said it runs and 3pt works but other than that, he has not used it.

My gut says the tractor will be more work than I want. What do you think of just getting the loader and wait for a good deal on a better tractor? He wants $2500 just for the loader but I would offer less. I believe this loader fits the L245 which might be a better size for me anyway. What other tractors does it fit?

Thanks for your advice!

That loader will not fit a L245. It will fit a 305 and 355, maybe a 295. With the problems it has, I can't see giving more than $2500 for the whole machine.
