Tires L3830 Tires Filled

Hello everyone...I used this site and all your friendly advise to help buy my L3830 w/ FEL 723. Quick question....I've only had it for a couple months, but I noticed my R-4 tires that are filled do not make full contact with the ground. I looked at the manual and it specs 20 psi in the rears for my 17.5 x 24's. When I tried to take some pressure out....I just got the gycol and water solution coming out of the valve.

Can someone with experience with this let me know how I can adjust the rear tires so that the contact patch is better.

Tractor tires should only be fluid filled up to the level of the valve when is at its highest point; that leaves an air cushion to allow for tire flexing when the commonly contacted rock or stick is rolled over, since air is compressible and fluids are not. With that in mind, to let some captive air out of the tire to adjust pressure drive the tractor on a relatively steep side hill till the valve is to the top. Or drive the tire onto a cinder block. The valve is now higher than the level of fluid and air can be let out, assuming it was not originally mis-filled/over filled in the first place.
Note that checking the air pressure with a normal air-only guage will ruin the guage, but NAPA etc sells a fluid-air guage which will work well. But what you're really trying to do is change the contact contour so the pressure you end up with is only of passing interest.

Thanks Simon....your response is very helpful. As you explained with the tires being filled 20 psi is no longer the correct pressure. I think they overfilled the tires with solution so it looks like I will need to take some out. By the way...your right...I think I did ruin my air only gauge. Live and learn.
