Comparison L3940 vs. L4400

PHILIP8N is right, this is a really important question. If you are doing to be a LOT of lifting or HP intensive work, you may well want to look t the MX5100. For VERY VERY close to the same money (or maybe even bit less than the 3940) you can have a larger and more powerful machine. The HST+ is a nice feature but personally I don't find I need it. I run in "M" about 80% of the time and just shift to low for slow precession or high power requirements.

Just so you know, however, the tractor itself is nearly identical between the smaller grand L's and the L4400. Basically the L4400 is built on the grand L platform, but without as many features. Some folks like all the widgets, I personally don't and would rather have the L4400.

I agree, all those bells and whistles are nice but for a tractor I'd rather not have them. Tractors are for work and I'd rather not have to worry about all those electronic gadgets failing. I just want a bare bone work machine.

Some people don't like the extra features but those features aren't cup holders and girlie stuff. The HST+ transmission is designed for the operator to be more efficient.

For loader work where you would normally shift into a lower gear while pushing into a pile of dirt (which requires stopping, shifting, then going again only to reverse the process to get back into the higher gear) the HST+ allows you to simply flick a lever and it shifts down without even letting off the HST pedal. Or if doing ground work where you need to go slow with more precision for a few feet then speed back up it also makes life so much better.

When I bought my 4240 I knew of some of the features but it wasn't until I got it home and had some seat time before I realized just how useful they really are. I was getting a front mount snow blower and the center pto isn't an option on the 4400 so it pushed me into the GL series. Now there's no way I would not get a Kubota with the HST+ transmission.

The GL's are great but if you think you might want real loader grunt then the MX5100 is a good deal. It come's with a real manly loader and bigger rubber.

all i can say is for that price id step up to the MX5100 HST.
