Narrowed my choice to these two. Pretty well eliminated the Grand L's. Any pros or cons anyone know of with these two. MX5000 is a little more HP but for my bush hogging and dirt moving I think either would do. Price difference is about $1500 more for MX5000. Loaders are different but not enough to make a difference. Anybody used both.

I don't have both. And since the L4400 was at the top of my budget I didn't even research the MX5000 much. So all I can tell you is what I think of the L4400 from a few days of experience and what I can read about the 5000. In regard to the 5000 it looks like you get a bit more HP, a stronger hydraulic pump, more loader options (and I suspect a more powerful loader). I can't tell what difference there is between the trannies. The 5000 doesn't seem to have a GST or HST but it is a synchro....so I assume you can do some shifting on the move, which is nice. I'm guessing, but don't know, that the 5000 is a more robust tractor. It sounds like you get about $1500 more tractor for your $1500. If it had been in my budget I definitely would have given the 5000 a serious look.

Having said that, I'm very pleased with the 4400. You may have read some of my earlier posts. It has truly exceeded my expectations. The loader is very capable and I've done some significant road repair in very difficult soil (rocky, dense clay) with it. But the best example is probably its performance with a 7' mower. Simply flawless in deep grass and brush. It did not tax the motor at all. I've been surprised at the available power in this little tractor.

I'd let your budget be your guide. If $1500 isn't a hurdle then I think it is an easy decision to go with the 5000. If it is a stretch then I think you can get the L4400 without second guessing what might have been. Also consider what attachments you can get with the $1500 you save on the L4400 as well as the fact that the loaders for the 5000 will likely increase its cost as well. Good luck and let us know what you get.

Time to get out the tape measure and the calculator. The MX5000 is bigger and heavier than the L4400. If you plan to trailer or have tight spots you expect to work in, the difference could be significant. Remember, the MX5000 will take bigger, heavier implements as well (it'll handle Cat II 3-pt. implements); not that you have to go with the biggest it can handle.

If trailering isn't an issue and tight spots aren't either, then what N80 said: You're paying $1500 more for $1500 more tractor. The extra weight of the MX5000 would be a plus if you're planning to use a heavy duty brush cutter. Whichever you choose, you won't lack for power.

Don't know nuthin' about the MX5000. I've had my L4400 for about two months now. I have 30 hours on it. I went to the Kubota from a 1973 Ford 4000.
One big reason I switched is that the Kubota weighs over 1000 lbs less. I have a lot of soft muddy spots in my little piece of swamp. The lighter weight made a big difference when driving across the mud. The 4WD and the R4 tires help, too.
I've been real pleased with the 4400. I've got no complaints. It's done exactly what I expected it to.
I guess a lot of your decision will be based on what you plan to use the tractor for (besides that nasty little money issue).
A bigger, heavier, more HP tractor can handle bigger, heavier attachments. I have 40 acres (25 cleared) and the 4400 is perfect for my needs. It handles a 700 lb, medium-duty, 6ft bushog easily. The LA703 loader moves plenty of dirt for my little projects. The tractor can push some decent sized fallen trees without spinning the wheels. I'm satisfied.

Specifically, the MX5000 is about 12 inches longer, 407 pounds heavier, same width, and slightly _shorter_ wheelbase (odd) and is slightly shorter at the top of the ROPS. It also has about a half inch less ground clearance. Turning radius is a few tenths of an inch larger than 4400 which is not bad.

So the big difference is length and weight, but the length isn't a huge issue since the turning radii are about the same.

Also, it looks like the final drive is a spur type, which I think is true of the 4400 as well.

These seem like very similar tractors. Does anyone know more 'under-the-hood' type differences between these machines?

I believe the PTO's are the same I have sat on the MX5000 when I was looking for a tractor and seems to me they are set up about the same. The MX is a little more heavy duty and can accept a bigger loader. I ended up with the L4400.
