My new L4740 HST showed up on Friday... I've only started to put it through it's paces.

The auto-throttle feature seems to rev the engine way up while the tractor is barely moving. I didn't note exact RPM's vs ground speed, but it seems like the engine is rev'd up way more than is necessary for the given speed. Definitely way more RPM's than I would manually choose for the given ground speed. Is this normal?

Another HST question... how difficult should it be to shift between L/M/H? Most of the time, the lever will not move between positions... it easily moves between Neutral and High, but will only rarely move into M or L. Of course, I'm stopped. I've tried brake on, brake off, clutch in, clutch out... nothing seems to help. Every now and then it moves freely. Is this just how it is, or is something wrong?

My last question... I had the dealer install the Kubota rear work light. I can't figure out how to turn it on. It's connected to one of the three plugs behind and to the right of the seat. I noticed that there is a work light fuse; I have not checked to see whether the fuse is blown. Should the light come on with the ignition, or with the headlights (which also require the ignition)? Is there another switch hidden somewhere?

Thanks,

Jeff

When I got my new B3030 it would not go into LOW range. The service rep from the dealer came out, removed the left rear tire, and using a piece of wood and a small sledge hammer "adjusted" the linkage. Worked fine ever since. Before he "adjusted" the linkage ever time I tried to go into LOW it would grind metal. Not a good sound to hear on a new tractor!!!! Good luck! Hopefully your dealer will make everthing right for you.

My L3240HST with auto throttle seemed to rev pretty high also when moving. I moved from a B7800 to the L3240 so it was an adjustment to get familiar with the differences between the tractors. When moving the tractor some distance I usually did not use auto throttle and just set the RPMs at around 1500 to 2000. The book calls for higher RPM's for the L than the book for the B recommends. The shifter between L M H doesn't sound like it's right. Mine was not like that. Clutch in and a nudge made it change.

I guess that range linkage varies a lot. My goes kind of hard but it goes with a good push. (L4400) Clutch in or out doesn't seem to matter.

Are you talking about the anti-stall feature??? I only use that when in a very heavy application(big dirt pile, heavy snow plowing ect).this gears the transmission down and revs the motor.

I don't find the auto throttle very useful except for driving the tractor around. The problem is if you use it for say loader work, it throttles the engine RPM's down just when you want more RPM to run the front end loader. In other words it revs the engine while moving but then brings it back to idle when stopped. I guess that is by design. It is useful for transport say driving on the road from point A to point B or when moving/towing a trailer around the yard.

If you really want to use the auto throttle function of the Grand L's, there is a thread on TBN about adjusting the cable to reduce the RPM's.

I use the auto HST and stall guard the most. I always leave them turned on.

I use the medium HST range probably 90 percent of the time. Moving between ranges may take a tap on the hydro pedal either front or back to get the transmission lined up. I believe the 3 hydro speed ranges are controlled by an unsychronized manual transmission that interfaces with the hydro unit. That is why it is sometimes difficult to get it into one of the three ranges.

The worklight circuit should be live with the ignition on. That is why the worklight itself has an on/off switch

It sounds like everything that I am experiencing is normal. Thanks for pointing the thread on the auto-throttle -- lots of good information there.

I did not realize that there is a switch on the rear work light itself. I haven't tried it out yet, but I have every reason to believe that the light will work if I turn on the switch :)
