I have a 3rd generation L5240 with LA854 loader, QA bucket (replaceable cutting edge). 1 set of rear remotes and rear hydraulic loop. 575 hours always stored inside. Overall excellent condition.

I'm considering trading for a new L5460 with cab. My question is what is my tractor worth, private sale vs trade. In my state we have a pretty onerous sales tax so you need to get at least 5% more for a private sale than trade as you get tax credit for your trade in value.

I know that there are regional differences but what is this tractor worth?

Thanks!

Whatever you think market value of your tractor is, that is the approximate price a dealer will have to sell it for.

Dealer will have to offer you much less for your tractor to cover overhead and make a profit.

Dealers have no reason to take trades, then sell previously owned tractor for less than the profit on equivalent new tractor.

Your /40 series is the last series with a muffler. Succeeding series has a Diesel Particulate Filter AKA: DPF. In a private sale to a knowledgeable buyer /40 series might command a 10% to 15% premium over early DPF tractors.

SPECULATION: I will speculate your tractor could command $22,000 in a private sale, $19,500 from dealer as a trade in.

I suggest you keep your /40 tractor and add an aftermarket Curtis cab. You will not have heat nor AC but you will be reasonably protected from winter weather and have a very reliable tractor.

Bear in mind that a cab equipped 'Grand L' tractor will not fit in a garage with a standard 84" header.

Thanks for the response. I have no idea what the value is... I look online and see l5240 with 2000 hours asking $25,000+; is mine worth that or more...???
The dealers must have a an industry standard reference that they use...

If you want to know the value of you used pickup truck it's pretty straight forward, tractors not so much.

Asking price is nothing. Only final sale price establishes market value.
Prices in Maine should be higher than in the South.
Used tractor prices are lowest when there is snow on the ground. Highest in the Spring.

If you think you can sell your L5240 for >$25,000 set appropriate price.

Have you asked a Kubota dealer or two what a fair private sale price would be in Maine?

There is no 'Blue Book' for tractors.

It seems you run your tractor around sixty engine hours per year, which is the average for residential users.

You may find regeneration associated with DPF on a new tractor frustrating. I clock 300 engine hours per year. My DPF equipped L3560 regenerates regularly every sixty engine hours in warm Florida. For you, that will be only once per year, which MAY cause a DPF equipped tractor regeneration problems.

Bear in mind that a cab equipped L5460 will not fit in a garage with a standard 84" header. Too tall.
