Loader LA463 Loader Sticky When Lifting / Lowering

Howdy, I have an LA463 on my L2800 hydrostat tractor.

The FEL control is sticking when lifting and lowering, but fine for bucket roll.

Based on what I've read, I need to remove the control valve on the lift / lower side (YW240) to clean it out / remove moister.

When I unscrew it, am I going to lose a bunch of hydraulic fluid?
Do I need to disconnect the quick disconnect hydro lines from the controller before I unscrew the valve?
Am I approaching this from the right angle?

Sounds like the spools might be worn.

Might not be a bad idea to take it off the machine and take it to your local hydraulic expert to see if it needs to be rebuilt.

You'll lose a little bit of fluid, but not like it will hurt anything.

I've attempted to locate the "spools" on controller, but can't find anything that matches with images I've seen from other FEL's. Are the spools the YW240's?

I did that on our B7500 this winter, there was water in the cap on the end of the valve that was freezing up and not letting it go in or out of float.
No fluid lost, just 2 Allen head bolts that I had to loosen up to take the cap off, here is what I found inside the cap:

Looking at mine, they don't appear to have "caps" that can be removed. The diagram shows what appears to be a ring (snap ring?) at the end of the valve. Wonder if they have replaced this with a newer model that is easier to work on.

Looking at the diagram, I think you just need to loosen the big piece of sticking out of the bottom of the valve, part P or F in the diagram and the piece where the detent balls ( Part 50 or 100) are located is inside of that, be very careful not to lose them or it will not lock into detented float position anymore.

As a first step, assuming your loader hoses have quick connects, swap the bucket hoses for the lift arm hoses to see if the problem changes. Often issues arise when quick connects do not fully seat.

As for the actual valve spools, the clearance between the spool and its bore is too small for a normal mechanic to be able to measure. 0.0005 perhaps. Lots of zeros. That is why no seals are needed between the spool and the valve body. Problems can arise in the ends of each spool where detents and the like are located.
