Hello would like advice from the good people of TBN. Monday I have a contractor with a dozer D6 with dual GPS trackhoe bush hog to clear 2 ac" this started out as a mulcher clearing this land and was sold on on the 80% less to burn price was agreed to no written contract. Am I wrong to feel let down or could this turn out better in the overall scheem of things.

Could you possibly clarify a bit more?

every job is going to be different. some things just take longer and can be unexpected.

a dozer may come in and just rip everything up and make it look all ugly (holes from tree root ball, to wash outs, to ruts from running machiner). but it is quick and fast of removing trees / brushes and like.

the other part of clean up. is dealing with the diaster from above. filling in holes, deal with wash outs, cleaning up the ruts from the machinery. dirt work needs to be done. along with dealing all the little limbs and most likely larger rocks from dozer doing.

another part of dealing with all the trees / brush and like from initial taking everything out with dozer. were to put it all? is it hauled out? buried? burned? pilled up and left for a year or so, so it all dries out some, and then burned? or is some of it mulched? or other?

just having someone and come in and "shred everything" with say a rotatory cutter. and leaving the bigger trees. is just kinda general maintenance work of the land.

the dozer work and clearing it all up. is more of taking out all the woods / trees in a since, and prep'ing the land to make it usable for something, from livestock / horses, to dirt bike tracts, to camping, to hunting, to simply a place farm to building a house, to etc... etc... perhaps area just got left alone for to long. and needing to get back in there and clean it all up. so it makes it easier for years to come of just a general 1 to 3 times a year getting a rotatory cutter in there, and keeping weeds, and like nocked down.

having correct equipment for correct job makes a huge difference, if ya don't have the time, skill set, equipment, know how, experience or the like (take your pick)... getting a good operator of the given machinery in there can be quick and fast. and you just need to figure out how much you want to do after. say just planting some grass seed, and putting some mulch down till grass has had a couple years to grow and fill in everything. and just mowing. or are you wanting to take on a bigger job in it all?

===========
don't leave it to xyz person, ya you will be a pain in rear to them. standing around watching them, and asking them questions, and telling them to do this or that, and it will most likely cost you more. (they billing you for you talking to them while on the job). but get out there. walk the area with them before job begins with equipment going.

bring some caution tape, to say tie around trees you want, or to go across some areas you want left alone. have a few cans of "spray paint" that you can spray on the ground / grass (marker paint that utility companies use find at any local hardware store) and mark out were you want a driveway / road, or some such. run a circle of paint of were you want all the trash to go (trees, bushes, etc..) or run some caution tape up along some trees / area were you want the pile and/or piles to generally end up at.

i have used google maps of all things a few times over the years for planning bigger projects out. and if you have a laptop with wifi connection... or computer at home with color printer...
1--enter your address into google search.
2--and then click on the "map that comes up"
3--click in the little "search bar" top left hand corner, and after a few moments you should see a link for "terrain" or bottom left hand corner if memory serves there is a very little button to switch over from "road maps" to terrain.
4--zoom in/out as you would like...

((the ugly technical part if you want to mess with stuff on computer)) ((skip 5-8 if you just want to print it out and draw on a peice of paper))
5--once you got your map on google press the "PRT SCN" key (print screen key) located top right hand side of keyboard
6--open up "paint" program (all microsoft windows come with it), mac computers have similiar program
7--go up to "EDIT" then "paste"
8--then go up to "file" then "save"

now you can draw on image with circles and lines. and what not. and show to person coming out. and save to a different file if you want to play around with some ideas.
TIP in paint.. go upto "file" then "print" being able to hand someone a print out. so they can see it. and take with them can be an advantage to you and them, i would like to say it that, it just all depends. everyone is different in how they keep track of things and what works for them.

9--IF you do not want to learn how to use "paint" then print the image out. and get you some markers and different color pens or even crayons of all things. and mark things up.
in your browser (IE / internet explorer, firefox, mozilia) what ever you are using for your webbrowser. there should be a "print" option to print out the webpage. print is normally located under a menu some were across the top of the browser window. (say under a "file" or under so some sort of button that has 3 horizontal lines)

the map's on google maps. tend to be any were from 5 to 1 years old for me over the years. but they tend to give a fairly good layout of things. and something to go by if showing location of road / driveway. fence lines, etc...

to above. remember they are human, and trying to micro manage a professional may cost you more than just cash. you may both get migraines. work with them. figure something out and go at it. they have an idea of how to tackle things, and getter done. your job is going to be most likely getting over what you would like to have done and understand there is some con's / pro's to everything.

Thanks for responding Happy Gilmore will try to post pic's tomorrow it might help to better understand the mess it will turn into because of the extra pile to burn this is 10 year growth of mixed soft and hardwood's 2 to 5" and thick as bamboo mulching would save me and my future neighbor a ton of grief tried to explain what was going on Monday and to say the least she was not a happy camper don't get me wrong there's nothing she can do to stop my plans (no permits needed here) but not a good way to say hoody neighbor if u catch my drift I try to get along with neighbors this mess is not helping but I guess she will just have deal with it.

boggen I'm trying to be as understanding as possible but mulching and dozer have two differnt outcomes it was the contractor who convinced me to mulch rather than doze.

We're talking 2 acres here, not a hundred, or even ten. If the contractor you hired knows what he's doing and he recommends mulching over dozing then it is probably the best way to go. Hauling trees, brush gets costly. Better to burn on site if possible. Burying stumps sometimes works but it depends on how big and the land you're burying in.
What were you quoted to do the work?
You don't have to go nutz and give the guy absolute detail. Just a rough map of the area and where you want things to go. Listen to what he suggests. I find if I ask 'what would you do here if you were me?' that helps get things done the way the contractor has done them forever.
