Howdy all--got a question and am looking for advise--
I pulled out my mower a couple weeks ago and found a puddle of gear oil underneath. I serviced the gear box at the end of last season and had no leaks.
The leak seems to be coming from the vertical shaft and is dripping/leaking under the mower. No oil leak at all on top.
So--went on line and found a parts breakdown. Looks simple enough--replace the seal and then back in business. My question is--should I replace the bearings on the vertical shaft? I see now reason that the seal went out so that leads me to wonder if the bearings have loosened up and the shaft is wobbling. Next question--while I'm in the gear box, should I replace the bearings and seal on the horizontal shaft? I'm not looking to throw a bunch of money at this 5 year old mower but truthfully, it has been a very good mower and I plan to get a couple more years of service out of it. Last question here--while I have the gear box open, is there anything else that I should do?
Thanks for the help --

About your mower,

After five years of seasonal use there is bound to be wear on the seals,
output shafts and of course the bearings.

The answer is of course what are you willing to spend on the repair;
with your mowers gearbox both seals will have extensive wear, and the
thrust bearing(s) will be worn and the shafts will nead to be replaced
because of the wear on them AND THEY WILL LEAK.

You will have to find out the cost of a complete replacement gearbox
versus the cost of 2 seals, 4 plus roller bearings, one input shaft,
2 spur gears and the output shaft.

Chances are it will cost you much less to replace the gear box or gearboxes.

If the seals, bearings, input and output shafts, spur gears, seal retainers all together
cost more than the gear box buy a new gearbox and throw th eold one in the scrap bin.

The 2 shafts will be worn because of the oil seal(s) and they will leak if you reuse them
even with new seals.

I wish I could give you a cheerful answer as your old gearbox will blow up eventually.

How old is your RCR 1860? I am currently looking into buying a used Woods BB72X, and reading this thread I am wondering whether I should worry about the gearbox of that unit. Does anyone know how expensive it is to replace a gearbox?
