I have two guesses as for what happened.

1. You never quite had the other tillers figured out properly. Howard is reputed as one of best tillers, so I doubt that it was the implement.

2. The other tillers did the hard work of breaking up the soil. It's easy to great results in an established garden patch, even if you are running a Sears walk-behind tiller.

I thought I read that the reverse tine tillers dig in better, whereas the forward ones are more apt to ride over the top. I tilled a my buddy's garden this year and was a little disappointed with the depth I got. My depth skids were set one hole from the deepest setting. Next year, I'm taking the skids off completely and breaking it up with a potato plow first.

That is the advantage of the reverse tine rotation. It is advertised as a one pass tiller and for the most part that is true.

Dry soil conditions can really tax a tiller's ability to dig in. Timing is important and a day or so after a good rain on well drained soil seems to work best for me and my conditions with forward rotation. Also, slow ground speed can make a difference between just mixing the top 3" or burying the spool in the soil.
