Landscape rake on the cheap (price)?

I "think" I'm in the market for a landscape rake. I can't find anyone who has one, but I basically just need it to scratch up the ground a bit so I can get some grass seed in the soil. I also have a few places where I planted grass seed and it's lumpy etc, so I thought this might help level it a little. I should also state that I'm not picky on my yard.

I don't see myself using this a lot, so I was trying to find the best deal (price wise) to buy one. I don't need to have a real wide one either. It would look goofy behind my MX5800, but for an implement that I might only use a few times this year, I'm okay with a light duty unit.

I've had zero luck on Craigslist finding a used one. I guess anyone who has one, keeps them.

Best option to buy one? I'm surprised that even the cheapest one at TSC or Rural King is $400.

I'm not sure if a drag harrow would work for me. I had some dozer work done last year and it's packed in there pretty tight. I ran the neighbors 5' disc across it last fall but it just made larger clumps.

Nice find on the York Rate. I'll see where they are at.

Sounds like you have some heavy clay. Perhaps the York rake will work. Maybe a toothed land plane is what you need.

See if you can borrow the Disc Harrow again. Learn to adjust it in increments from aggressive to passive angles on the gangs, pull it at a good clip, and after third pass from different directions a Box Frame Tandem Disc Harrow will leave the soil level and fine enough for grass seed. Soil needs a little moisture but if you have clay, not too much.

(Most angle-iron frame Disc Harrows are not adjustable.)

I believe the disc was angle-iron and not adjustable. It's a pretty old unit. I'll try and catch the neighbor again to take a look. I went over everything a couple times and thought it looked good. I guess I was wrong.

I bought a Loyal drag harrow last year from TSC. A smaller one for the Steiner. It is quite aggressive when used with the tines down. Still a bit pricey for what it is.
