Eddie started a thread on making a simplified landscape rake a few weeks ago. I asked him where to get the tines and ordered some for myself. I used steel that was already here so I didn't have to go buy any more. I made the main frame out of some 1" X 2" X 1/4" tubing. The triangle shape is so It will have lateral strength. Here is a pic of the frame started.

I was at Northern Tool a while ago and bought a swivel for a trailer jack, but instead I repaired the one that was on it. This swivel was here and doing me no good so I put it to use. It is a piece of DOM tube 3" ID and a piece of 2 3/8" OD that was 3/8" longer than the outside piece. I welded the shorter, larger piece to the ends of the 1" X 2" tubing. I welded a piece of the same sixe tubing 24" long to form the other end of the frame triangle which made it 25" wide. A piece of 2" X 1/2" flatbar bent to a slight angle covered the joint and made the place to mount the 3PH pins.

I have a drill press so drilling the holes wasn't as big a job as Eddie is doing. I wasn't sure if I wanted the tines at 2" centers or 3" centers so I drilled every 1" on center.

After drilling the holes I decided to go with the 2" on center tine spacing and it seemed to work pretty well.
I welded a piece of 8" X 8" x 3/8" plate to the inside piece of tubing and 2 pieces of 1/2" X 2" between the frame rails and drilled a 3/8 hole thru for the start of my swivel lock. After this I turned it upside down and drilled up from the bottom for the angle holes on each side of straight and then turned it backwards and drilled one straight for there. I turned it back over and took a 3/4" reamer in my big 1/2" drill and opened the holes to 3/4" That way the holes stay aligned, which is something I have had trouble with in the past.

Here is the finished rake. I used it to rake the drive, spread a load of mulch, and rake the area in front of the new tractor shed and I'm very happy with the results. Later, Nat

Hey Nat,

Nice job with the rake. Did you buy the same tines that I did? They are the largest one they sell and cost almost $5 each. Do they flex at all? They sure seem to be extremly stiff.

I'm putting mine at 3 inch centers and wonder how yours did at 2 inch centers. Did you pick up very much dirt??

I have my tines 7 feet back from my tractor so I can hold more material and reach in and around the trees better. Did you find that your rake filled up with branches quickly? I'm wondering if I've made mine so long that it will become awkward and back heavy.

Have you changed the angle of your rake? Did it do anything?

The block of wood in your last picture looks like it might be a nice feature to have welded on. Do you think a pipe slid inside another pipe and a pin would work good for a retractable stand?

I'd sure like to see some pics of it in action. Maybe a before and after shot along with how well it holds material.

Thanks,
Eddie

Eddie, the one I got were 3.99 each. They have 2 each 3/8" holes 1 1/2" apart. They are pretty stiff but seem to work fine. I am using it to windrow rocks and it works good for that at the 2" spacing, and doesn't seem to pull much dirt along, but I think for branches and limbs 3" spacing may be better, cause weeds and grass will build up pretty fast.
Set on an angle it seems to windrow the rocks pretty well, but willdump them as you turn if you don't watch pretty close. I thought about a pipe jack for the front, but it weighs very little so I will just pick it up for the time being.
I'll try to get some action shots in the next day or so. I'm really impressed with how the ground looks after a pass thru, so I expect it to do a good job. Vickie wants me to sow an area below the house so she can watch the deer feeding. I figure I'll need to mow the area first so that it doesn't drag up to many weeds. I will plant it in Rye for the fall and maybe mix in some fescue so that when winter is over they can feed on fescue. BTW, I have a great big old comercial drill press you can have, just be a long way to come pick it up.
Does any TBN folks need an old drill press, it's a whopper, an Excelsior #20. I bet it weighs 900 lbs and is in good shape except it needs a 3/4 HP motor. let me know, all you have to do is come and get it. Later, Nat

Ditto on the action shots. This is a tool I'd like to make - right.

I'v seen a lot of ideas on TBN but not as many pictures of sucess. Makes me wonder if others (besides me) also have ideas that don't work as well as imagined. One of the best things we can share is our failures so others don't duplicate the failure.

One thing would question is - how much twist do you see in the support bar for the tines?

Nat,

Where did you order the tines from, please? Part number?

Thanks

One source, where I got mine, is Agri-Supply. They sell the same tines that are used by Woods and Landpride. I went with the standard duty 2-hole tines. Page 48 of the September 2006 catalog. part # 33913 for $2.99 each. Warning, if you order any large quantity of tines, break the shipment into two orders so you do not have to pay the overweight shipping charges.
