I was reading some review of the new AMD mobile chip, comparing a few AMD equipped systems w/ similar Intel Centrino M machines. The author stated getting about 2 hours w/ the AMD versus 2.5 with the Intel. I'm going from memory, so I could be off, but not by much.

I've had my computer on since about 9pm, it's now 12;30am, and my battery indicator says I have 1 hour, 44 minutes left. I've been surfing and listening to music for the last hour and a half. This is average for us when surfing. It's a Gateway M320 we bought back in November for around $1000.

I didn't know much about laptops before buying this one. My sister has an older Dell P4 laptop that we've borrowed previously, but otherwise we've only ever had regular pc's. I shopped Dells, HPs, Fujis, Toshibas, Gateways, etc. I liked the features of a particular Gateway, then called them to place an order. The salesperson was so helpful.... she convinced me to spend a few bucks LESS and get a similarly equipped Centrino versus the P4 based on what I told her we'd be using it for. We also splurged an extra $50 or so for the larger battery. I don't care if they have some secret pricing scam that nets them more profit on the Centrinos or whatever.... this lady spent an hour with me on the phone & was truly helpful. I asked a lot of questions and she was patient & kind the whole time.

Anyway, after reading the article, I was a little shocked. I really average 4 hrs or so before having to plug in. Last weekend, the kids watched a 2 hr DVD and it still had plenty of juice left when we got home. Plus, unlike my sister's Dell, I rarely notice any heat while using it on my lap. Nice.

The built in speakers can hardly play loud enough to watch a movie in the car, and the headphone jacks don't work well either. That's my only (complaint). This thing is paper thin & light, and made me a laptop believer.

FYI... it's now 1:01am, and batter life indicator says 1 hour, 19 minutes left.

I've never gotten more then about 30 minutes when my Sony VAIO laptop battery was new. It can hold a second battery and does need it if you use your laptop on batteries. I rarely do but must say, even having only 30 minutes has helped save me from power outages since the battery is also my emergency backup. Mine has a Intel P3 as I recall.

My AMD Compaq Presario with a 12 cell battery is good for a little over 3 hours. It's about a year old. The newer models are suppose to be better. It does run warm. Fan is always on.

I've got two laptops, one Dell Inspiron 9100, with a P4, 3.2GHz processor and 17" widescreen monitor. It'll suck the battery dry in about 1 1/2 to 2 hours depending on load.

I also have a HP/Compaq nx5000, Centrino 1.6 GHz and 15" HiRes monitor. It'll run 4 to 5 hours on a charge pretty much regardless of the load, other than burning DVD's.

I believe the key to laptop battery life (both charge life and actual battery life) is to not leave the laptop plugged in at all times and to run the battery down all the way before recharging.

We have a HP laptop and it normally goes about 2.5 hours on a full charge.

I have Sony Viao, one of the smaller ones targeted for business use. That means it has been optimized for speed in a small package, which means a small battery gets used up rather quickly. I used to get about 3 1/2 hours of run time per charge. Then I put another 512K worth of memory in it and the run time got about 45 minutes whacked off the run time--but it switches between open applications a lot faster.

It's a wide variable set, smaller units have less run time because of the smaller battery and higher performance units have less run time because they are running more memory/faster processors. In a given company product line most manufacturers will cover the whole spectrum. You just have to choose what's important. In my case carrying this same laptop into work every day means weight is important and business use says high performance. I pay the price in battery run time.

2 to 2 1/2 hours on a 2 year old Compac, and the fan cycles on and off constantly............

I'm pretty sure the new batteries are supposed to have no "memory" or something.... meaning it doesn't matter if they're fully dischgarged or not when you go to charge them again.

Anyway, I'm sold on laptops. Especially when there's a neighbor nearby with a wireless network I can steal high speed internet service from. At the moment, I'm getting 36 mbps /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
