Our cordwood saw is wearing blades way too fast and it doest cut fast enough. i was thinking of having a saw blade laser cut from a 3 or 4mm Hardox 500 plate, and bend the teeth out by hand. (my uncle is an expert on setting sawblade teeth)

Has anyone ever tried that before ? and what is a good teeth spacing ? I was thinking a tooth every 10 degrees (36 in total) on a 500mm diameter blade... 30mm deep, and that means about 40mm spacing.
Whats the best tooth shape and angles ? cutoff saw blades are too slow for firewood sawing...

Hello Renze,

Before you attempt anything I would contact Casey Creamer who is known as the Saw Doctor here in the United States for his opinion.

From what I know of Hardox having worked with it and
with it in mining I will say this; a saw blade lazer cut from
Hardox plate and then hammered will be more trouble than
its worth because of breakage at the tip.

I would also ask Casey who makes good blades for cordwood saws or contact one of the builders of the firewood processors that build them here(at least 4 that I know of) that use circular saws in the United States and Canada.

If your having this much trouble with blades perhaps looking at the chomper firewood processor is a better option simply because it shears and splits rounds at the same time and a 12 inch long round/block can be split into 8 pieces in 6 seconds with a fully automatic Simplex 14 model. the number fourteen indicates the largest diameter that model can shear and split-they also offer a 16 inch model as well.

EDIT: Option two would be to wash the logs at each cut prior to cutting them as this will remove a barge load of dirt just as it is done at the sawmills prior to debarking sawlogs.

Circular Saw Blades CMT Tools - In depth

it seems laser cutting is used for manufactured saw blades as well... i will take the expansion slots into consideration... Hardox can be bent, but not very sharply... you dont need teeth perpendicular to the blade so i dont think its going to be a problem... :)

Renze,

You should look into Water Jet cutting. There is no HAZ to change the hardness of the blade tips.

For the effort and repair-ability, I would look at standard blades with replaceable teeth/cutters. there are a lot of them available and even 2nd hand. dont waste time & $ rebuilding the wheel of steel that been used for 100's years

Cutting too slow may mean not enough power for the saw blade diameter. No mention of power. What are you cutting? Was it always slow cutting? I'm thinking more of a sharpening problem. Fewer teeth with more power may be the answer.
