I know this won't be very useful since I own an Iseki TS1610F with a 2 cylinder Isuzu motor (975cc), but as some sort of comparison, the valve adjustment on mine when cold is 0.0177-in. for both intake and exhaust.

That correct according to the shop manual for the YM195/YM1700

When I built my 1700 that's what I adjusted mine to. I have since sold it but it is still running great some 150 hours later.

For those used to working on U.S. engines with valve clearences close to the .02" range, clearences in the range of .005" seems way too small.

The U.S. is sorta unique in having valve clearences this much and still not be noisy. Something closer to .005 is very typ for non-U.S. engines. At least that is what I've found over many yrs of working on engines from various countires.
