There is a sequel to my post about Chretien: When our country fired him by booting out the Liberals, nothe person called STEPHEN HARPER insinuated himself to head up the CONSERVATIVE ALLIANCE, which morphed to become the CONSERVATIVE PARTY OF CANADA, and Harper's conservatives eventually won a majority. Harper is a master Machiavellian and he has totally destroyed government accountability by using his power over party members to muzzle them from media contact, and using the power of the Prime Ministers Office,(PMO) to govern by fiat (in the USA that is called" by executive order". So Canadians have only one opportunity every five years or so, in a general election, to kick him out. Harper sees himself as the fiscal savior of the Canadian economy, but his program has hurt too many Provinces and individuals, so there is a lot of anger about those steps.
To counter this, Harper manages the news and all of the spin comes only out of the PMO. The Gun Registry and the firearems act continuing in existence, despite Harper's promise to abolish that, is one example of this deceit.
Gun owners are aware, and there are many other quarters of anger, such as war vets that are being shamefully treated.. the list is quite long, so the pundits think that Harper will be another loser in 2015 when Canadians go to the polls for another General Election... BUT.. there are very limited choices for the next government wqhich has a realistic chance of success in the election. The front runner is the son of a former PM, Pierre Trudeau, Pierrre was a charismatic man, but in my opinion a very poor PM and also a machiavelian man, very popular with the youing ladies, but not a dillatante.
His son, Justin Trudeau gained the leadership of the Liberal party after a succession of spectacular mistakes the backroom boys made in selecting a new leader. These choices were abysmal and the party was in a shambles. Seizing this opportunity, Up popped Justin Trudeau, still chewing bubble gum, he got a landslide based upon his own and his father`s charisma, so he is it if the liberals win the general election.
Like his father he is the son of privilege and is quite headstrong...inexperienced and peach fuzzy. A lot of Canadians realize this, so it is by no means a foregone conclusion that the liberals will unseat the conservatives in 2015.
In the big picture, we Canadians have no idea where the country will go,. nor what will happen to gun control.
Ou4r country is locked into a Constitutional dilemma, chiefly because Pierre Trudea, in his most Machiavellian move, succeded in repatriating our Constition (the BNA act) from British control in the 1990's. He insewrted a requirement that for future amendments, nine of ten provinces of Canada must agree, by an eighty percent majority, on such an amendment. Such a majority is, in Canada, an impossibility, because Canada is divided by geography and ethnicity, into several camps who will never agree.. The chief issue is what we call " the French Fact" i.e Quebec. Quebec is a wild card in Canada. It is made up of a conquered people (by the English in 1876) and their descendants. Quebecois comprise about 35% of Canadians, and they are fiercely partisan, having a constant agenda of Separatism to become a sovereign nation in and of themselves.; The Qubecois have their own party called the Parti Quebecois (PQ).
They have held two referendums about separating, both have been narrowly defeated.. for the moment...but there looms ever-present the specter of the PQ succeeding in dividing Canada... so our PM"s must walk a narrow path so as not to antagonize the "Frogs" as some call the Quebecois.
A constitutional crisis would almost certainly be a debacle...with the real possibibiliy of dividing the nation. That poses a bigger problem than most can imagine, both here in in the USA, so any move to try top amend our constitution is out of the question...and Harper knows it.
But most Canadians do not, they just don't keep up on such things..they are demoralized and disgusted..and not quite smart enuff to see all the ramifications going forward.
So we come full circle, from Pierre Trudeau who authored and cast this die, back to his son perhaps..or back to Harper.. or worse..to the NDP, who will jam up the works forever.
If Mussolini was running, that would not be a bad thing.
