I have a long gravel driveway, which I maintain with a rake and it looks ok, but the edge that meets the lawn is kind of ragged. I noticed some of the long gravel driveways in my area have a sharp, well-defined edge that looks very clean. How do they do that? I suppose I could ask the owners, but thought I would tap into the TBN brain trust first. Thanks.

I guess they could have dug it in a bit.. or have edged it with a plastic edge barrier.. or edge paver stones?

There is a power tool for doing it.

It has a small, vertical, rotary blade that cuts into the ground a little bit and slices off any grass/weeds that creep out past the line of cut.

When I had 250' of gravel driveway to lay in, I called a friend with a Bobcat and had him dig it down 6", thinking that would give me that nice straight edge and keep the gravel where it belongs. I had 6" of driveway mix spread and now, 3 years later, the edges have grass growing in them, water has carried some of the gravel to the sides and so on. I think the only real good way would be to edge it using concrete or pavers or something..........

An edger works great on concrete driveways, sidewalks, etc. On a gravel driveway, I think you would see your fair share of rocks flying as you walked it down the edge -- not to mention the not so smooth surface to run the edger on would not make such a perfect edge.

Just a thought here how about using a Subsoiler set just barley below ground level to ame a straight edge.
If nothing else you will get more seat ti me!!

they probably use a rear blade with angle adjustment. You can turn these so the angle is pretty extreme and make a nice edge and ditch at the same time.

that's interesting....although it might be tricky to watch the edge of the blade and the roadway in front of you at the same time... I often have this problem when using the rake on my curvy driveway. maybe a rearview mirror?

I prefer the natural look grass creates when it grows right up to the part kept clear by the cars driving back and forth. And to make it even better, I like it when grass fills in the middle part also. It looks more peaceful and natural to me.
