Lawn mowers with factory locking rear diff?

Hey guys,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I have about an acre or more of mowable grass. Steep curving hills, ins and outs, next to the house, around rock walls, etc etc.

My father owns an early 70s Kubota B2100E which is an absolute unit and obviously has a locking diff.

I was pricing out the new machines with awd like the kubota GR2021 and the JD x738, but they are pricey.

I current have a POS toro lx425 and a craftsman gt18 (smokes like a banshee but runs pretty good)

Should I rebuild the horizontally opposed Briggs motor in the craftsman and run it with some ag tires? Or should I look for something a little more turnkey that can handle my hills well. The toro is pathetic, but it is light enough that I can seat bounce it with very low air pressure in the tires (I also grooved them) and it does the hills OK, but it痴 sketchy.

The gt18 has wheel weights on it and seems to do hills pretty well, it痴 just slow.

Basically I am looking for a recommendation on any sort of lawnmowers and/or garden tractors with locking diffs or 4x4 which can be had for $5000 or less, used. Also if you guys have any sort of hidden gems which are really good on Hills I知 happy to hear about any experience or feedback.

Husqvarna TS-348XD and 54XD have locking diffs. There are wheel weights available for them. I can't tell you how it works as I don't have one yet. When I replace my 25 year old Sabre that's probably what I'll get. There are a number of people here who have one. Search the site and you'll find the threads.

Ag tires can be hard on a lawn, if it's lawn that is.

How about a midsize walk behind mower? One caution of the rebuild idea is that less and less mechanical parts are available for that OP twin as time goes by. If it's taken up smoking, likely some machine shop $$. Repower a possibility, but no exact match new. Welcome to the forum.

Kubota's GR2120 doesn't have diff lock per se, but the rear axle positively drives both rear wheels when the front wheels are pointed straight ahead. When the front wheels steer, one rear is disengaged to effect the desired turn.

The Deere X500 series in in your price range and has diff lock. Considered to be a GT.

I have a 2003 Simplicity Conquest which has a K66 transaxle that has a locking differential. I live on the side of a mountain and it is really good on the steep parts. As long as you don稚 need a true garden tractor, a Conquest would work for you. Simplicity calls it a 添ard Tractor? It also hands down has the best quality of cut of any mower I致e ever used. I bought it used for $500, maybe you値l be lucky and find one used.

Those look like nice mowers. You can buy a new one for just under 7 grand.

My old JD F725 has a diff lock that comes in handy sometimes. I love the way it drives but the 54" deck doesn't provide a clean cut no matter how everything is adjusted. I was planning to fabricate a deck for it this winter but it didn't get done.

I second the walk-behind. I love an exmark hydro, and they can be found for 2500 in good shape.. even a scag swzt48 hydro is quality for hills.. If you aren't the walking type, there are plenty of different velkie options.

For that money, Look for a used Spartan ZT mower. They have one of the best COG and are great on hillsides. A little more money and you can buy new, if you have a dealer nearby.
I have a 2016 SRT-HD 60" Kohler 25hp, Dad has a 2016 SRT-Pro 61" Kohler 25hp. I have ran his along the road at probably a 25 degree slope and was impressed with how well it held.
