Backstory:
I had been looking for a Planet Jr for a while now, for my father-in-law, who grew up working on the family痴 farm. They grew and sold veggies etc. Now that he has retired he has started doing more gardening and even planting some veggies and helping a local farmer at the local farm market. Well he went out a purchased a new plastic planter to put in onions, and was less than satisfied with it, and wished he still had the old planter they had on the farm, that he no longer had.
So the search started.
I lucked out yesterday and actually was able to come home with two. One for each of us. One is I believe a 300, and is complete except for the lid, the other is a 300a that was once mounted on a tool bar that had handles added, and given the purple paint, was used as lawn art. The guy I got them from said he had used the 300 up to a few years ago. I still need to take it apart and give it a good cleaning, but it will be used in a few days to see if it does a better job on planting onions than the "plastic" planter.
I was able to completely disassemble the 300a, and everything is in great shape for it's age. It is missing the seed plates, the seed plate clip and the hopper clamp. A check of ebay, and the hopper clamp will be here this week, seed plates are available. I may have to make the clip, but I am still searching.
Comparing the two, I noticed the 300a handles were not mounted correctly, and I'm making the brackets that are needed. Also I believe the top frame is also mounted incorrectly and there needs to be a loop made for the front to have the frame parallel to each other. This will allow the top frame to mount to a tool bar. I'm not sure if I would ever need to use it behind the tractor. Main goal was to use for planting peas, beans etc in the garden.
The best part, when I took them off the truck, my wife took one look at the 300 and said, where did you find that, it is exactly what he used to have, right down to the row marker.
