We have an STX46 that needed a rear tire replacement. Not bad considering it is original. But the wheel was stuck on the axle so I used a stick and hammer to drive it off the axle. Problem is that before I finished the axle came out of the manual transmission. Apparently there is a clip that is supposed to retain it in the transmission.

Anyone ever taken one of these apart and repaired them? Anything I should be wary of before I split the two halves?

Thanks,
Jeff

I have repaired rear ends that the axle had come out, same as yours.
I remove the rear end from the tractor, power wash it,then set the rear end on a 5 gal. bucket. Separate the 2 halves, re-position the axle and install a new "C" clip. Reverse to re-install rear end.

That's good news to hear. Thank you! Suspecting that I will need a new c-clip since the axle came out before removing the clip. Where would I find spare parts for this since JD doesn't recommend opening it I doubt they offer spares?

Most likely there is a name on the tranny. Like spicer, or peerless. And a model number tag someplace on the case. Peerless has a metal tag that slips into a slot on the side normally opposite the brake. I don't remember where spicer is.

Get that number and we can go from there. I appears to be a snap ring retainer system. Have disassembled and repaired several of this style of tranny over the years.

I appears JD has a parts breakdown at www.jdparts.com website. put in your model number, and then click on sectional I believe and then find your tranny. Looks like they used both spicer and peerless, as well as a hydro option. but it shows parts for both the stx38 and 46 so could be for several model setups.

Randy, It's a SPICER and the model 4360-68 matches your info. But the serial number is quite a bit different than the jdparts.com. I've attached a photo of my tag. I need #47 and the drive pulley would be an added bonus.

I looks like the snap ring item 47 is part number AM122527 and the pulley on top of the tranny item 9 on the belt and idler pulley diagram is part AM104405

Does it matter that the serial numbers don't match?

The first set of number is something on the order of -xxxxxxx and the second set is xxxxxxxx- The first set means the serial number is below that number and the second set the serial number above that number. You are in the first set of serial numbers.
