just venting! have a great selfpropelled walk behind mower to go along with my GT and big tractor, have had it serviced by dealer when i was working so much, but now i had some time i will change the oil my self, oh boy!!!! drains form underneath, remove blade(ok) remove sttachment for crank(ok) now there is a plastic baffle , 3 bolts (according to manuel) oh by the way need to remove 2 screws (philips head) but can't get at them, so remove rear wheels, and sure enough the baffle came off, now u can't get at the engine drain plug cause the drive mech is in the way, remove that and now u can drain oil.. seems to me this could all have beeen averted with a simple side oil drain. thanks for letting me vent. great lawnmower other than that. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Frank,

I believe that's what they call "progress". /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Yep, it's obvious that in a lot of design work these days, the people drawing on the paper (oops...age showing...now they got computers to draw) NEVER actually touch a prototype or finished product.

My dad has a statement, something like..."There's a special place in hell where bad design engineers are forced to work on their designs for eternity."

I guess you could always get one of those drill powered pumps and suck the oil out through the dipstick tube or filler spout. Personally, I was never comfortable with doing that myself. I didn't feel confident that I got out all the oil I could.

Well...I guess I vented too. This forum is great!

You have more patience than I do Frank.
I would just flip it upside down and let the oil run out the fill hole !! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

i don't like doing it that way either. like to run engine ,get it good and warm and all the contaminets mixed into the oil, then drain it. glad to know ur dad feels the same way i do, i would love to be standing over them engineers as they work, except that would mean i WENT TO HELL ALSO /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I JUST MAY DO IT THAT WAY NEXT TIME. and i am not joking. may not be the best way but i am too old to be dealing with that kind of crap. besides the blasted thing will probably last longer than i will.

Is there any chance the motor block is tapped for another drain location?

Can you install some piping that will make the present location easily available?

nope. no other tapping and the bottom tap is right above the blade and drive assembly. i bought a suction gun today at NAPA has a tube that will fit down the filler tube and allow me to suck oil out, even if i have to pull oil then add some and d suckit out again, will be well worth it. will try it this weekend.

Frank,
What brand of mower ? So some of us might not make the same mistake. I have a Yard Man self propelled 6hp. No problems draining the oil on it, except for my remembering to do it. I have had it about 7 years, think I have changed the oil 3 times /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Good Briggs I guess.
