After 17 years of ownership, my Kioti finally developed a problem. Here and elsewhere there have been comments and perhaps discussion regarding the regulator. For about a month the charge light would come on, then go off for no discernable reason. Put the charger to the 4 year old battery but it was 100% charged. A few days ago, smoke appeared so I shut down right where I was out in a field. A couple of hours later, I drove it to my workshop and arrived just as it began to smoke again.
It was the regulator mounted to the firewall. A vendor wanted about $150 for the part. On another site, a non-Kioti specific regulator was $40. I bought it because a TBN member from Australia adapted this successfully for his LB1914. The couplers are compatible, both 6-wire. The wire colors are different at 3 of the 6 connectors. The other half of the connector attached to the Kioti harness doesn't match either one.
I'm fit but pushing 80 so this wiring issue is a problem. I figured out how to attach the new part by making a mounting plate thus using the threaded holes in the firewall.
I have no problem with cutting the connectors and wiring with solder but since the two halves of the Kioti connectors don't match each other, color wise, perhaps I should fork over the extra hundred bucks.
If any members have dealt with this problem, I would appreciate the feedback.
