Case 360
I have a Case 360 Trencher with a Deutz diesel engine. The engine starts ok, but will only run at an idle. If I let it idle for about 15 minutes, and then spray some starting fluid into the air cleaner, it will run ok until I idle it down. It will not pick up rpms until I use starting fluid again. Any thoughts what could be causing this problem?

Have you changed the fuel filter/air filter?

Yes, I have also tried fuel treatment. It seems that the starting fluid increases the rpms, and that causes the engine to speed up. The engine will run normal until it is either shut off, or idled down.

Once you spray the ether and get the rpm up above idle, do the throttle and governor work as they are supposed to (can you increase and decrease engine speed with the throttle lever and will it maintain engine speed even with a load on it)?

It sounds like restricted fuel delivery.

Since you changed the fuel and air filters , check the fuel strainer in the fuel tank. It's probably restricted with crap and corruption.

If the ambient tempertures are really cold, you could also have a problem due to summer blend fuel being in the fuel tank and gelling up, restricting fuel delivery. Similarly if it's below freezing and your fuel has a lot of water condesate in it, it can freeze on the filter, or the tank strainer.

Go easy with that starting fluid. It's hard on the rings.

That was my first guess. But then I got to thinking.......it will only idle, till he uses starting fluid...........then operates at full throttle for hours.

Does this machine by chance have a solenoid to control the throttle? Some machines with a design such as this one don't have a 'variable throttle'.........just a high/ low throttle operated by a solenoid or something.

Once the engine picks up rpms with the starting fluid it will operate normally, with or without load. The trottle will function normally, and will remain normal as long as rpms stays at a fast idle or above. Once the engine returns to a slow idle, it will not speed up unless starting fluid is used. I have been using the machine by using the starting fluid in the morning and keeping it at a fast idle all day until I am ready to shut it down for the night. The throttle is controlled by a cable that connects to a lever on the side of the engine. I don't know how it controls the injection pumps from there, since it is inside of the engine. I was told that this engine uses two injection pumps, one for each cylinder. It seems to me that there is some type of governor that keeps it at an idle until rpms reach a certain limit, and then it allows the engine to speed up.

Sounds more like an injection pump/govenor problem. If it was fuel filter, fuel flow or air flow problem it wouldnt run at high rpm at all. I would talk with a mechanic that is familiar with that engine and how the injection pump works.

I missed that detail. I does sound like something in the governor may be the problem. Like it is sticking. Does you throttle lever move the lever on the injector pump when you try to increase rpm? Make sure that it's not sticking.

You might try some fuel additive that increases lubricity of the fuel to see if that might help. It might take a few days to be effective. The low sulfur diesel contains additives for this at the pump so that's a long shot

I doubt you have two injector pumps. You might have a lift pump to pump fuel from the tank to the injector pump and then there's the injector pump itself. If you can't find a problem in the conrol linkage to the pump and a fuel additive doesn't help, I'd call a diesel pump shop and see if they have any advice. Some pump work may be in your future.
