Might be a dumb question but I am planting 6 different plots this year and have 50lbs of both white and red clover. Each calls for a different lbs per acre and the way I have it figured if I apply 6-8lbs of white and 10-12 lbs of red per acre I will use both 50lbs bags with none left over. Now my question is do I weigh the seed and with what? In years past it was simple I split the bags in half. This year I have 4 more plots and I am trying to actually not over seed and waste money. With the density of red and white clover being different it hard to compare them together in a bucket and get an accurate weight.. so what to do..?

Why mix them? Why not do half of each plot in one of each type? I try to group my plants together in a food plot to see what they are eating. I will put peas in one corner, beans in another wheat, in the other and turnips in the last corner. Last year, the turnips where what they liked the best. It was real easy to see where they where eating, and to know what they where eating. Mixing it all together makes it very hard to tell because they sort of go through everything and you never know what they really like, and what they are just sniffing or tasting.

You might think of mixing some oats in with your clover too, it will add great forage for deer, good cover for the young clover and it can help act as a filler/ dispersant for seeding.

Worse case scenario you can use some small scales like the bathroom kind, not 100% accurate but a good "ballpark". Might use an empty coffee can for a container and mark it for 1lb for each variety.

Thanks for the suggestions- I have planted this certain mix before and deer really like it. The mix is rye, oats, red and white clover and austrain peas. I plant the oats and rye together in a mix. Then the peas, then spread red and last spread the white. The red clover is a little bigger than white clover so it really needs to be spread by its self. The same way with the white clover seed it is smaller so it to has to spread by its self. The rye and peas helps the clover get started and takes a little browse of the clover. Even if I strip plant it I still have to split the 50lb bags up to do all 6 plots on the farm. I guess I will just have to get a small scale to measure it out... All need to be planted different do to there size and depth of planting. It takes sometime but works, just never had to split out 50lbs clover bags into 6 different fields.. It sounds like I will be buying a small scale next...

Just got a digital fish scale that works great for weighing small lbs!!! Just what the Dr. ordered for weighing small seeds out of a 50lb bag..

Take a 3 lb coffee can and fill it with seed. Weigh it on a good bathroom scale and once you know how much each can weighs you can easily figure out how much you need for each plot.
