Tractor
4210 jd
Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum and would like to get some help with our churches tractor. I am the maintenance and repairman for there 4210 JD tractor.

We use the tractor to mow about 8 acres of grass every week and usually this is done by volunteers. Well, we have had one person that has been doing the most of the mowing for about the last couple of years and yesterday he really made a mistake. There was hydro oil leaking out of the system and he kept on using the unit until it just plainly quit moving. We have about a 1/2 mile oil streak down our grass. Doesn't look very nice. Anyway, I don't have a service manual or a parts manual, but am very good at any repairs. I've worked on anything from old lawn mowers (something I like doing to this day) to a full master diesel mechanic. I've never worked on a tractor like this one though and would like to become acquainted with the internals workings of this unit so I can diagnose and repair the problem. First, I would like to know were the pump is located, and what kind of pump it is? Second, does anyone have any manuals on this unit that would help me in any way?

Today we are going to put the filter back on since the volunteer took it off? we don't know why. Then we are going to fill the oil reservoir back up and see if it will at least move. I know there will be damage to the system, but we need to find out how bad. Then I will have to do a pressure and flow check of the system to see how much damage there really is. The JD store said we might get lucky and it may move if the driver turned the engine off as soon as it quit moving, which I doubt that actually happened. Is there anything else that I should be looking at?

Our church doesn't have much money to put into the tractor that is why we are not taking it to the JD store for repairs. I've already had the frt and rear axles off and out to repair leaks and other damage in the past. That's the price we pay when people are put on something that they have no understanding of.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give us!

Well, Ken, one sure way to destroy a hydrostatic tranny is to run it out of fluid. You
have the "eHydro" HST, an electrically-controlled HST. Much simpler than an automotive
trans, and quite fixable if you are handy.

You need to buy a Technical Manual (TM1985) first, and your tractor will need to be split to get
at the HST. If you tow the unit to your shop, then make sure the range shifter is
in neutral.
