I have been leading on a craigslist scammer who is 'selling' a new b7800 w/fel for 5k. He, of course, wants me to transfer funds before he ships the tractor. Anyway to take this info and get this guy nailed?

Here is the payment information:

Name: Pullman Ben
Bank name: BANK OF AMERICA
Bank Address: Laurel Canyon Blvd. Los Angeles CA 91606
Account number: xxx
Routing number: xxx

I put the x's in the account info....just in case.

Do a quick search through google. I found a site not too long ago but I don't remember the address. They took all the info and forwarded it to the FBI os some other agency. IIRC they had pictures of the guys they helped bust. Pretty neat.

I went that route once.
Led the guy on til I had him really hooked and then contacted our Provincial Police to supply the links.
They told me to go to our local law city enforcement who absolutely did not have resources for such an event.
From there I went to our RCMP who told me to call back monday.
On monday the simply blew me off saying they did not have resources for a 'minor' $5000. scam as international crime simply cost to much to persue.
(The asumption was international as the seller claimed he was transfered to England and needed to sell his 25 hr tractor/backhoe and trailer fast due to new job and location + he wanted american express payement)
I was refered to 'phone busters' who were also of the same opinion.

Now try to teach our youth that crime does not pay!

BUT don't blow a stop sign as that they can handle!

I would give the scammer fake information and waste as much of their time as possible.

Which equals the amount of time you're wasting.

You can always send them a Fedex package where they have to pay the freight. Tell him you do not have your own Fedex acct but there is a drop box next to your office. You will gladly send him his check if he can pay the overnight freight bill. If he will pay the Fedex fee, he can have his cashiers check the next day.

Then you wrap a brick in a Fedex box and mail it to him. He will sign for it and HIS Fedex acct will be charged at least $100 to send a brick overnight to England. He will see your name on the incoming package and sign for it. Why wouldn't he?? After all, you are the stupid American being scammed.

The reason why you see all these items being offered at just under $5000 is because many places set the limit for felony/grand larceny at $5000. Under that, it may only be a misdemeanor. If they cheat you out of $4900 the cops will not bother with a lot of work for something that isn't even a felony.

Sounds to me like your playing with a dangerous snake and you will get bit

Yep, if you blow a stop sign you just may kill someone that you hit; the scammer is only going to take your money.:D

Seriously, I've met police officers from all the way around the world and almost without exception they love to catch thieves. But the politicians control the purse strings and thereby determine priorities. How much can you afford to spend to catch a scammer like the one described?

People who like to play games with e-scammers have no clue what the scammer can find out about them and if, as MrJimi mentioned, they get bit, they will be the first ones who whine about it. As to people who think the police should pursue this. Good grief. Let's see. I have a dollar to spend on resolving crime. Should I spend it on rapists, murderers, burglars or a crime that probably originated half way around the world and exploits the buyer's greed. Nah, much easier to take a cheap shot at police.

I'm sure that MikePA and myself are saying if you play with fire, you will get burnt
Just report him/her to the proper authorities
I have a high dollar item for sale and the buyer is talking ESCROW, he will learn about cash real soon, I paid cash, he can also
:)
