Massey 135 continental 145 gas engine - changed oil but after replacing filter getting oil leaks at the gasket and at the bolt head. Tightened the bolt as
much as I dare. Cartridge Filter came with new gasket which seems to fit fine. Any ideas? I've taken it off twice and realigned everything to
no avail. The filter housing has the spring and a washer that rides on the bolt so it's not missing. Didn't leak before I took it apart to change
the filter. What might I be doing wrong and what to try? Thanks

First, I love the look of the 135.. if I were going to restore a tractor that might be the one. On the filter, make sure that the area where the gasket seats is clean and that the old gasket isn't stuck on still.

For the plug, make sure you didn't cross thread it. Were there any metal shavings when you took it back out? If you cross threaded you may need to take the plug to a NAPA and see if they have a tap the size of the plug and rechase those threads and get a new plug. That is the right way to fix. The redneck way to fix might be to smear some Permatex on the plug and run it back in and see if it holds; not a good long term solution though.

I did clean the old gasket off and the area where the new one was installed. There is a recess the gasket fits in quite nicely. I'm sure the bolt was not cross threaded. Going to take it off again today and see what I can
figure out. Thanks

BTW.. No offence meant from the "Redneck" comment.. as my mom is from KY and I is one.. : ) I consider it an actual compliment to be called one. They know how to do things a lot of others don't.

I've experienced that with that type of filter/can assembly and they can be a PITA. The can isn't fitting down into the recess all the way around. Did I mention they are a PITA to put on?
