leak from split pin in hole below trans

Gday ... I have a 500 series massey...its leaking fom the split pin that sits lossely in the hole below the transmision housing ( more than just dripping )..(multipower tractor ).whats the most likely reason ? will it be expensive .please tell me the best and the worst ..Doug (Maddog)

First question..... Is it tranny oil? Or is it engine oil?


I'm not all that familiar with 500 series, but on the Massey's I am familiar with, here's the choices. Tranny oil; Multipower has a seal between the tranny and the bellhousing. It can leak. Also the front input shaft seal can go, but not that common. Engine oil; Rear main seal. Older Perkins had a tendency for the rear oil pan gaskets to leak, ending up with oil in the bellhousing.

That weep hole you're referring to is there to deal with any leaks into the clutch area. A few drops every now and then won't hurt anything. It just drips out that weep hole. A BIG leak can take its tole. Oil down your clutch real good and you get to spend some MORE money.

Oil pan gaskets are relatively cheap and can be changed by anyone handy with the wrenches. Rear main seal means splitting the tractor. Either tranny seal will require a split too.

Better tune up the wallet, 'cause you're getting ready to put it to the test.
