I was a complete newbie in hydraulics as well- I have a old homemade woodsplitter with cylinder that wass leaking and in pieces when I got it and ruined shaft. I looked around online here and internet, only found little help. With few positive comments from wayne county hose here, I took my cylinder to one shop, didnt want to rebuild it due to bad shaft. I took it home and hand sanded the shaft for hours and hours (rust) till I think I got it smooth and clean. I went to another shop and just gave them the gland end and pistion. told em I need seals for it. this guy just took his calipers and took measurements and said be right back and got all the parts in 5 mins and said here you go. he showed me which one goes where and then I went home andd assembled it. Peice a cake, easier then I thought.
If I were you, I would take the cylinder off and on your bench. take it apart and take both ends with you to local shop and ask for seals.
