I pulled the cover off the 186 today and noticed the fragrant stink of gear oil. I've got a small puddle of gear oil under the driver side wheel. It's leaking at the steering joint.

I'll be purchasing the service manual and seals this week.

I suspect that the recent single digit temperatures chilled everything down enough to open up the seal just a bit.

I've eyeballed the parts blow-up diagram on the front axle and it doesn't look terribly difficult, but I've been wrong plenty of times in the past!

Has anyone undertaken the seal replacement? I'll be doing both wheels. Any special tools needed?

Thanks,
Randy

If mine I would just top it off with Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak and put off the seal job for 10 or so years. It has about the same viscosity as 90w gear lube.

You should be able to replace seals with tools you have in the shop. I broke a pinion drive a few years back....there's a post out there from me somewhere on this subject......while I had it torn apart.....I replaced a leaky seal on my 186d. Pretty straight forward as long as you remember to remove old collar before installing new one. This was a dumb mistake on my part.....couldn't figure out why things didn't want to go back together....once I realized my mistake....things went smoothly. Good luck with your project.
