When I took the tractor out of the shed this spring, I changed oil, checked all the fluids, and greased everything. We had a very wet spring, and the tractor was parked outside a lot. I have been seeing trany oil seeping out of the PTO, and the TPH leaver. Pulled the trany dipstick, and found milk about an inch above the full mark.

Off to buy a bucket of trany fluid, and have a fresh filter handy. So will be getting to that.

Where does the rain water get into the trany?

Around that rubber shifter boot. It will run down the shifter and into the boot if its not still soft n pliable or if the boot is cracked anywhere

Just as clemsonfor said, "around the shifter rubber boot " You can use a Zip-tie around the top of the boot to tighten it to the lever;)
I'm not 100% sure but I think water can also come in around the throat of the steering column and get into the gearbox, at least have been known to on some of the older Kubota's,

On a 186, or at least on mine, there isn't a shifter boot. My tractor has the gear shift mounted on the transmission tunnel. I don't know where it could get in. Maybe around the filler or dipstick? What confuses me is how much water it would take to fill the transmission up by that much more. It seems like we're talking a couple quarts or perhaps even more. I don't know how that much could get into the reservoir by leaking or seeping. I'm interested to hear if you figure out what's happening, because I wouldn't worry about rain except fr the seat with my tractor, so now I'm a little nervous.

My 186 has the shift on the dash, so might be getting under where the linkage goes into the tran?

I have drained. refilled, and put a new filter on, about 50 bucks total. I figure it will take a couple of more fluid changes, and filters, to get all the water out.

Oh well, back to mowing in the morning.
