first thing, howdy all.
i am rebuilding my AC model B trans.
all of the leather OEM seals i removed was way past used up.
the replacement seals i can get are a more modern type made with Nitrile sealing lip.
can i expect the shafts made for the leather seals with the spiral grooves to eat the newer seals?

Welcome to TBN Dan.

I'm unfamiliar with "spiral grooves". What do you mean?

I believe the spiral groves were designed to help pull the oil back into the oil side of the seal. To tell you the truth I really don't know if they would cause any problem using a more modern lip type seal. A easy fix would be to measure the diameter of the shaft's that are being sealed and get some wear rings to install over them. They are actually ment to repair groves worn in sealing surfaces of shafts but would probably work just as well to seal your spiral groved shafts. Parker Hydraulics and most seal manufacturers like SKF/CR, National, Stemco make wear rings/sleeves.

good idea, thanks
i will have to check the shaft diameters and seal bore outer diameters and see if some are available.

You might check with the fellows who supply the new seals and see what they have to say. :D

Make new leather seals from dog rawhides. Soak them in water untill soft, then sok them in oil to preserve, then cut and stretch to fit. The rawhides come in quite a few thicknesses, so pick them out carefully.

Thanks for the clear pic Dan.

No I don't think I've ever seen a spiral like that.

Dieselpower's suggestion of a sleeve sounds like a good idea.

Thanks Dieselpower for the tip regarding sleeve manufacturers, the only sleeve I'm familiar with in Australia is Speedie Sleeve, but maybe it's time I checked around a bit more.

Speedies are rather pricey for the tiny thing they are.
