I had about no choice. For three years I worked 7pm-3:30am downtown. How to get to airport area from there? I found the Orange/Colfax connector is fairly deserted. Not sure why, as it was a 4-lane when built. It just never caught on. Even in the daytime it's light traffic.I wouldn't be near that area of town that time of morning. I have seen the videos posted on social media of this phenomenon, but it does not seem to be just a local thing.
The few times I got caught in those 4-across 40 car high speed processions I just pulled down one of the wide side streets to get out of it. I know my way around that side of town and stay off the narrow streets. Too easy to get blocked in by groups of people standing in the street.
Heck, sometimes I'd take Michigan St. North to Riverside and run that up to Pinhook Park, west through Corpus Christi to Bendix and back to LWW through the industrial park. Turned a 4 mile commute into a 7 mile commute, but few dangers.
Funny, when I first stared at the Newspaper in the mid 80's, we'd get done printing Saturday and Sunday morning papers around 4am. Then about 20 of us would go out in the parking lot and drink a few beers and eat peanuts. The cops would stop by and have some peanuts with us. The tradition was about 100 years old. You had a few beers so you could get to sleep when you got home to overcome the split shift of evening papers weekdays to morning papers weekends.
Anyhow, if you tried that today, you'd get shot at.
