Do you use a bike computer to track your mileage?

I dont, just rough estimate my distance. In my opinion you can use that 100ish dollars for other things.

I'm glad you are doing better. Most people would have gave up. You have a lot of will power.

Do you use a bike computer to track your mileage?

The bike and the treadmill both have a computer tracking mileage. I don't use mileage. I did use bike for a long while. I quit bike recently. I stopped bike because my back doesn't feel as good lately. I believe the back is a result of mowing lots of grass. The shaking of seat does affect it. I do use treadmill. I do track time and heart rate. I do about 15 minutes including about about 3 minute warmup . Then I set machine for "5" incline and "3" speed. my heart goes up to 100 - 120 depending time of day and how recent I take blood pressure pill.

Cheers...

This is a great thread. Coffeeman, you are an inspiration. My story isn't nearly as good as yours, but I have lost a hair over 60 pounds {240-178} since last September. I started out just eating better along with very light walking, and as I lost more, i was able to do more. Most days I walk a couple of miles, plus other cardio. {thrift stores have provided me with several exercise machines} I've been doing a light workout with barbells the last two or three months. I adapted a workout I saw on You Tube for old folks, and each month add a little more weight. But I think eating healthy is the most important thing you can do. I track my calories and exercise at myfitnesspal.com, and find it to be a good tool. Soon I will have to go from losing to maintaining my weight, and not sure how that will be.

Hi Green Power. Here is a pic of the horizontal leg press in my home gym. I alternate it's use with a trap bar (second pic ) for doing squats. A barbell works equally well. Previous posters have all provided excellent advice. Kudos to you for recognizing the need for more physical activity in your lifestyle. The bike is an excellent start. Be sure to do things that you enjoy. Good luck and have fun.

I could put that $35 towards a additional bike (or tractor), and if I ever needed or wanted to I could use my brothers. Thank you for the the link though.

Two suggestions to track mileage on the bike. The first is to download an app for your smartphone, if you have a GPS enabled device. Strava is one service that will measure your time and distance. There are others.

If you don't want to carry your phone, you can measure your routes on Mapmyride.com. (They also have Mapmyrun.com for runners) I use this website all the time, and have all of my routes mapped out. It gives me distance and elevation. Great tool. With the mapping, it also gives me the ability to create new routes, because I can see where roads go that I have not ridden before.

The apps are free, as is a Mapmyride account.
Happy riding, and be safe.

Leg press versus free weights.

A leg press has the advantage of avoiding putting a lot of stress on your upper body and back. I messed up my back moving a boulder and couldn't tolerate lifting free weights for several months, but could sit and do leg presses without much trouble.

Took up fencing this year (poking people with a piece of spring steel, not stretching wire between posts) and spending 60 to 90 minutes at a time doing lunges is a real workout.
