I'm looking for a toothbar for my L4240, 854 loader and HD roundback 72" bucket.

I have holes in my bucket, I'm assuming to bolt on a cutting edge, do the tooth bars mount there, do they weld on, or does the bucket need to be drilled and bolted elsewhere? I see alot about Markham toothbars but never on my tractor, seems like all the BX's keep them busy.

A tooth bar is a flat bar with ears at both ends.
The ears get bolted to the insides of your bucket.
Teeth holders are welded to the bar and have like thumbs that fit under the cutting edge so that you have leverage when prying.
I made my own using 3 inch X 3/8 flat bar stock and each 'tooth holder' fits tightly under the bucket back about 2"
In my bucket I already had a 3/8" welded in place cutting edge and my whole tooth bar slips into place so snugly that I need a good few raps with a 10# sledge to seat it firmly.
I only have 2 -3/8" bolts to hold the ears in place and have pried boulders out that were heavey enough that the hydraulics lifted the rear end of the tractor. (the rock was bigger than my 4 ft bucket!)
A loader with 'tooth bar' is a whole new world!
You can excavate and load stone imbedded soil with ease whilst without even a measly 4 inch stone will deflect the bucket and cause you grief.
With teeth you get full loads every time.
Also great to skim roots piles and loose branches.
Bad for finishing work unless you remouve the 'bar'.
Don't try to do a neet job of loading a pile of sand that was , say, dumped on your driveway.

Good luck!

Markham welding makes all their toothbars to custom measurements, so I don't think thats a problem. You might need to confirm that the front edge of the bucket fits their design. But odds are good. The bolts in their design are about 8" back from the lip on each side of the bucket. Since the work is custom, they might accomodate the holes you already have. Melissa is great to deal with.

Ordered Monday noon, received Thursday noon. About $230 total (includes shipping) for my BX. You have to measure carefully inside left to right on your bucket, 8" back from the front. Then they subtract 1/4" and make it to that dimension. Mine fit like a glove, and the improvement in digging can't be overstated. If you plan on doing any digging you simply have to get one.

Amen. My L3940 became a different monster with the tooth bar installed.
Sorry, I don't remember who made it. It came from my dealer and it might have been a WR Long tooth bar since they sell a lot of their attachments.

It sounds like you are describing the HD round back bucket that has the holes punched for the bolt on cutting edge. I just installed a woods cutting edge on my 72 HD round back bucket(L4400 LA703 FEL) and it fits like a glove I havent got to dig with it I am waiting for the rain to stop.
