Using a strategy of floating on top of mud or snow can work, but don’t be wrong once.
Generally: Weight is traction.
This is 100% true if you imagine a bald tire on a hard surface.
It gets more complicated with lugged or chained tires that can bite the surface, but in most cases this will still be true with all other things being equal.
More weight, better traction, more ruts.
Now we are just arguing where to put that weight (favorite ice cream).
...and pro/cons of getting it on/off, etc..
