I have a JD 3720 and I want to level my backyard. It is about 2-3 acres. Yes I know whatever I do will take awhile. My question is most of the land is hilly, meaning dips our about 6 feet deep, so what i should say is it starts out a little high drops about 6 feet for 10 yards comes back up....it does this for about 50 yards. Some spots higher. It is mostly level for the dips. I want to know if I should bulldoze the land to level off or what should i do. Looking for all info in this process. I dont want to create staning water.

thanks all.

Bulldozer would work the best, but you will need some black dirt to cover it all when you are done. Once you take off the topsoil you will end up with all the crap underneath on top.
Hope this helps.

You may already know the soil type that you have. But if you do not I wonder if you could benefit from looking at soil maps of you area. I have seen very detailed soil maps of my town. You might not have ledge in your area, or clay soil but these conditions could slow down your efforts (or force you to change your plans) considerably. This information could help you to know what you are likely to uncover and what type of soil you will be able to leave on top. ARe you going to be able to plant grass or some other type of ground cover with the soil you plan on leaving on top? Tractor on!

Its clay about 1-2 ft down. I thought I would just collect all the topsoil...level the 2-3 acres moving the clay...use say a boxblade to level the soil i collected then pack it in...then plant grass seed. Is this a bad plan?

I hope you have a lot of time on your hands. And a diesel delivery each week.

clay is had to move just so you know, give it a try. It seems anytime you do anything like that there is never enough good soil to cover it back up. So you may want to plan on hauling some good in when near finished.

Sounds like a two day job for a D6. Going to have along way to get the top-soil out of the way,in-order to level then have to spread it back over, and using a little tractor will take you forever and you may need to leave small terrace's just depends on how steap land is,to slow erosion down or use square bales....

While you could do it with your tractor, it would take forever. A dozer would be much better and faster. Rent or hire a dozer and save all that wear and tear on your tractor.

This sounds more like a cut and fill job. You need real earth moving equipment not a light-weight medium size CUT like your 3720. Hire it done by a contractor with the proper equipment. My neighbor's D7 Cat would handle it. If I had your job, I'd borrow the D7 and have at it.

Good luck
