I just purchased a NH TC40D. The range selector lever goes into high gear just fine but it doesn't always want to go into low range. Every now in then i goes right in but usually it is stubborn. Anyone else having this problem?

Congrats on the new machine. Your "problem" seems common to most HST units irregardless of brand. The gears for the pumps in the HST are not synchronized. Just very carefully press either the forward or reverse pedal while pushing the lever, it will slide in very easily.

Now that I think of it, my Toyota Corolla has the same problem with reverse, often have to let the clutch out a little to engage the shift lever into reverse. Not just a tractor problem.

Thanks for the info DaveV. I will try that tomorrow. And by the way, I love the machine! I couldn't ask for a better tractor (in my opinion). Thanks again.

Thebus, you will find that the same thing happens when you engage 4WD. Just gently touching the forward or reverse pedal will allow the gears to synchronize and the selector will easily slip into place. Congrats on your tractor purchase. I know you will have many productive and fun hours using it./w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif

Jim, I found that too on the 4WD, but my real problem is getting it out of 4WD. If the tractor is under any kind of load or not moving at all, it's nearly impossible. Best seems to be when moving on level or slightly sloped downward ground or in the middle of switching from the forward to reverse pedal.

Thebus, be careful you're not pushing too much when you engage I or II ranges, otherwise you'll grind the gears. I prefer to gently touch the pedal as Jim describes and then let up and try again. You're right in that going into II seams easier than I. In fact I almost never have to do anything to put it in high, but usually have to use "the method" to get it easily into low.

Here's a similar technique I discovered for the range and 4WD shifters. If it won't go in easily, leave it in neutral and press the treadle forward or reverse for a half second or so. Since it's in neutral, you don't have to worry about a grind. Usually goes right in after doing this. If not, I try it again. For getting back out of gear or 4WD, come to a stop, and then back up about a foot (or go forward if you were last moving in reverse). 4WD or the range selector almost always pop right out when I do this. I think what's happening is the driveline is unloaded by moving in the opposite direction. I use the same "back up" technique to get it into 4WD. When I first got the tractor, I used to fight like heck with the range and 4WD shifters. Since I have started doing this, it pops in and out effortlessly, and I never have to use the clutch.
