Farmall M
Hello
First post (ton of info on this site) and am looking at a 2005 Montana made by LG with a FEL and only 200 hours on it. Two questions the price asked (firm) 13,000 seems a little high when comparing it to others I have found online and when compared to an M how much brute force will I give up when pushing snow. I drove the tractor and like it but was wondering if I would like something a little bigger. Do not want to be unhappy with it down the road.
Thanks

Welcome!

Not sure how to advise you on the size of tractor you need, its really up to you to decide what is big enough. The model you are looking at has a Mitsubishi engine and is a solid machine. For pricing, I have no idea where you are or what prices are like for new machines. I would guess that that model new was probably around 16-17K. 200 hours is nothing but warranty is expired.

If you are really concerned about 'brute force pushing snow' then put a blower on it!

I have a 3940 (38 hp) and I am very happy with the power and traction.

Welcome. I have the exact tractor you are looking at. Bought it in 2006 with a box blade for around 18K. I now have 800 hours on mine and it has been a problem free tractor untill now. The valves had to be ground on the head, however I believe it was my fault for adjusting the valves to tight during its 400 hour service.

As far as pushing snow, we get allot here in Flagstaff AZ and the year before last we had record levels. The tractor did great by me, you couldnt just wing it off the side when it was real deep, it would just push the tractor around but it was fine to scoop and dump with the loader.

I have now found a 3940 that is less money but has more hours (574) the thing I dont understand is it is listed as haveing less wieght than the 3040 on the Montana site, is that due to a different tranny or something?

I have no idea why there is such a large weight (at least as described on the Montana web site):confused3:. The 3940 has a bigger engine and a bunch more power... doesn't make sense to me. Maybe this is an error on the web site?
Funny, they also list the 3040 as having more lift on the 3pt. All the other specs are the same (length, width, fuel cap, hyd specs, tire size) - they are virtually identical machines. I would opt for the 3940 - the extra ~10 hp is a big difference. Is the 3940 HST? the 3040 is shuttle only (not that shuttle is bad but maybe HST is better for your needs?)

I would be inclined to not believe the numbers published on the Montana site - where would you stuff 500 lbs difference on the same frame tractor with a smaller engine??? I don't see anything similar to the Montana 3040 specs on the LS site.

Yes the tractor is listed as a HST, so a much better tractor considering it's a little cheaper, 10 more HP and a HST, it seems like a better choice for me.

I sold a alot of 3940's in the purple and blue colors. Their one tough machine. The engines have plenty of power to run all functions. The Eaton hydro has been reliable with no issues. The only problem is people lifting up on the seat and pushing the forward-reverse pedal. The seat has a safety switch on the rear, and if one pedal is pushed with no seat weight, it will stall the engine. Takes a little getting use to. If you are short, it may be more difficult to see over the fuel tank, to hook up a 3 pt implement. Been nicer having lower telescoping 3 pt arms, but can't have everything. If you are long legged, you'll feel like your knees are crammed into the the dash, something the other color is complaining about right now. A few things, people commented about, when I was selling those machines.

 I think my seat switch lasted a couple of days and I disabled it:(; that was a huge PITA. I really wish it had telescoping 3pt arms! Anyone know of a compatible set?

I know the lower lift arms off a Kioti CK 25 and 30, are close to the Montana compacts, and are a very nice design. The width of the ball where it attaches to the tractor has to be measured, to make sure the lynch pin will go through the hole. I always thought when I bought one, I would change over to those. Ended up with a utility tractor, so never pursued it.
