I need some help with a implement purchase. Does anyone have an opinion of this PHD? I'm thinking of buying one with the 6,9 and 12" augers. It is mail order and I have no one anywhere around I can look at before buying. Is it OK digger or occasional use? I would mostly be using the 12" auger to dig planting holes. Will the augers hold up well and would 620.00 be an OK price? Any help is valued. Thanks, MP

MP, I have the 7300 with both a 6" and a 9" auger, and I am happy with it. We have a glacial till soil type which is very rocky. I get about two holes drilled before popping a shear bolt. The gearbox seems to be very robust. My only complaint is the auger tip is really cheap and bends very easily. I have heard that the tip from Bush Hog will also fit the Lienbach auger.

You get what you pay for, I don't know anything about that post hole digger but I know a lot about digging holes. I live in New England and the ground if full of stone and ledge. It is just a fact up hear, for me I know every 3 holes my auger is going to bite into a large stone and I have to pull the auger out and go at it with bars and clamshell. The drill tip and cutters are very important. You need to be able to replace them and if the bend they are junk and will render you PHD useless. In my opinion the PHD is 1 of those implements you go with a brand name. Rakes, Blades & cutters you can get away with cheaper implements. Mine cost just under a grand with a 9 inch drill. I want a good size hole for setting posts and I just open the hole up with a spade for plants. When it bites into stone it just dances or stalls the tractor but the cutters are fine and I just move to the next hole. Remember a PHD is just an aid you still have to use bars and clamshells but it is a wonderful attachment

I have a Lienbach Line post hole digger with a 12 inch auger. I'm not sure what the model number is, but I bought it brand new with my Century tractor for $295. My dealer told me that was his cost and he wasn't making any money on it.

I would never own a smaller auger than 12 inches and have no idea what you would use 6 and 9 inch ones for. If you think you'd use the smaller one for 4x4 posts, you'd be mistaken. You could put one post in a small hole, maybe get two in line, but that's it. You need every bit of a 12 inch hole to get three posts in a straight line. Even then, you will need a post hole digger to straighten out and adjust your holes.

Thre are all sorts of things under the surface that you can't control, but will affect the direction of your auger. Roots and rocks are the most common.

For $700, I'd go to some dealers and look for a Lowe or Pengo post hole digger. They have special bits that you can replace or upgrade. The Leinbach has a lousy, cheap head on it's auger that will wear out in a few dozen holes. Then it's a nightmare to dig with it.

As for gearboxes, the Leinbach seems like a solid unit. Mine has busted dozens of sheer pins. I put a new one in and it works great until I break another. No complaint on that part of it.

For what your paying and what you'd be getting, I'd pass on that deal.

I have a Danuser spinning a 14 inch... very good for all around use and tough as nails... but costly.

The Leinbach tips are replaceable. I bought one from the Smart Farmer on ebay. (Great guy) It is much heavier than one I borrowed from my brother in law. The digger is $429 with your choice of auger. Additional augers are $99 each and the tips are $19.

Anyone know who makes the TSC hole diggers? I went to a JD dealer and they want 700 for ag-mier. I can get the tsc one for 485.00 with a 12" auger. Is it worth it?
