Still looking since thats half the fun!
I wonder what happens to people who are involved in accidents after the fact? Do they go back to the farm or give it up all together and refuse to have anything to do with it?

Such as where a spouse, parent, grandparent is involved in a tractor/farming injury and the other was the cause.

I once ran a commercial fishing boat. While doing that I ran across some who had family members that had died from fishing accidents. I asked them the same kind of questions and usually received quizzical look and the answers: "It's who we are!"

I'm sure it's a very personal decision only the affected individual can make. I have a remotely similar situation. My dad was killed in a car accident. I continue to work in the auto industry and continue to drive my own vehicles. Life has to go on /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My best friend and his brother farm together. Their place is just down the road from mine. Several years back, Kevins brother was hauling round bales to their feedlot, from a hayfield located along the busy state highway we live on. He had one bale on the loader forks and another on a rear bale spear. A car came up on him WAY too fast. It tried to pass, but there was a car coming. He cut back, but didn't have enough room to stop. He slammed into the rear of the tractor. Terry (the guy on the tractor) was injured, but not as bad as you might think. The driver of the car, and his passenger were killed instantly. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

4 days later, I saw Terry back at the same exact spot, doing the same exact job.

Like it was said, life goes on.

I'm sure different situations effect different people different ways.....

My wife grew up on a dairy farm in northern Illinois until she was 12 years old. That's when her father died in a farming accident. Her mother found him tangled-up in a combine head in a field he was harvesting with the equipment still running. Even after 15 years of marriage and 32 years since the accident, I don't probe for more details for obvious reasons (too painful for my wife to talk about).

All I know is that everyone who knew the guy who would have been my FIL said he was the greatest man you could ever imagine meeting. He was proud of the fact that the only bank loan he had was the one he got to buy his farm. All his tractors and equipment he bought used and at auctions and would fix them up. I think working with equipment that was past its prime was a factor in him having to unjam his combine head.

Even though my wife operated large ag tractors from the time she was 10, she won't go near my little JD 4010 CUT. When I wanted to get my tractor, she fought me every-which way she could using every argument possible except for the real reason which is she is afraid of machinery.

I believe it depends a mostly on the person and their circumstances. If a family menber of yours were to die in an auto accident would you quit riding/driving ? If the farm is your familys life and a member is killed on the farm would you give up your way of making a living and feeding your family ? It is a decision each person has to make. For myself I believe you need to get back on the horse that threw you.

I hope I go doing something I love.

If it happens to be on a tractor, drivin a plane, or in my favorite ole truck - I hope that no one gives up being around the things they love just because that is the way I went....

Now if it is something they hate- I hope they give it up before they are influenced by something that happened to me... and move on to something they love ...

I also enjoy sleeping - so going in my sleep wouldn't be bad.
If I go in my sleep are you guys gonna quit sleeping ?

I friend of mine died in an airplane crash... I never for one moment thought about quitting flying - an I know he wouldn't have wanted or expected me too...

There is a saying I've seen someone post I believe on this forum about sliding into heavens gate all worn out and used up - which means LIVE LIVE LIVE well and when its time to go - then you'll have time to take it easy and safe...

this past july i was fishing in the fog off long island ny in a 25' center console. we hear a boat off our starboard bow cruising at speed. before we could react here it comes....34' sea ray apparently on auto pilot on full plane with no one at the wheel.
my 3 friends jumped right before impact. i had on alot my foul weather gear, boots etc....i did not jump.

well he rammed us or more like crushed us at about 25-30 knots. we were drifting. took out the center console,a portion of the bow. you could see the marks where his twin props came across the bow.

boat began to sink. i threw the guys the anchor ball, life jackets, got them back on the boat.called a mayday to the coast guard,we stabilized the boat.coasties came and transported us to the hospital etc......a long story

i ended up with a broken foot, sprained knee, broken ribs, broken sternum, concussion, nerve damage on my left side
now they want to operate on my neck.....ouch.

but anyway i will be back out fishing again.but never again when there is a chance of fog and never again on a boat that is not equipped with radar.

actually we are all going out on the guy's new boat on our first anniversary this july.

you never know when your time is up. my wife just shook her head when i got home. i used up my nine lives years ago. she say's i am the luckiest person in the world. been in numerous car wrecks, motorcycle accident, run over by a cab in n.y.c. (i had the crosswalk) . i was late for work in tower 2 on sept.11th.

Many of my friends are commercial fisherman and too many have died at sea. i will still go to sea.

i have a friend who's child drowned at home in the pool. the pool was filled and is now a patio.

tragedy effects different people in different ways.

alot of stuff happens in life and you just have to get back on the horse.

stay safe

Scott,

Glad no one was killed in that one.

What happened to the other boat? Hit and run, or did it suffer serious damage as well?

Years ago my uncle was killed in an automobile accident while on his way to work for the families heating/cooling business.

The police on the scene said that another car failed to make a stop at a intersection and hit Robert broadside. The impact threw him out of the car, and the car rolled over on top of him and crushed the life out of him.

Said he would have survived the accident had he been wearing his seat belt at the time of impact.

I have never been in a vehicle since that I did not buckle-up, and my now grown children are the very same way.

Bless you Robert wherever you are. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
