this past july i was fishing in the fog off long island ny in a 25' center console. we hear a boat off our starboard bow cruising at speed. before we could react here it comes....34' sea ray apparently on auto pilot on full plane with no one at the wheel.
my 3 friends jumped right before impact. i had on alot my foul weather gear, boots etc....i did not jump.
well he rammed us or more like crushed us at about 25-30 knots. we were drifting. took out the center console,a portion of the bow. you could see the marks where his twin props came across the bow.
boat began to sink. i threw the guys the anchor ball, life jackets, got them back on the boat.called a mayday to the coast guard,we stabilized the boat.coasties came and transported us to the hospital etc......a long story
i ended up with a broken foot, sprained knee, broken ribs, broken sternum, concussion, nerve damage on my left side
now they want to operate on my neck.....ouch.
but anyway i will be back out fishing again.but never again when there is a chance of fog and never again on a boat that is not equipped with radar.
actually we are all going out on the guy's new boat on our first anniversary this july.
you never know when your time is up. my wife just shook her head when i got home. i used up my nine lives years ago. she say's i am the luckiest person in the world. been in numerous car wrecks, motorcycle accident, run over by a cab in n.y.c. (i had the crosswalk) . i was late for work in tower 2 on sept.11th.
Many of my friends are commercial fisherman and too many have died at sea. i will still go to sea.
i have a friend who's child drowned at home in the pool. the pool was filled and is now a patio.
tragedy effects different people in different ways.
alot of stuff happens in life and you just have to get back on the horse.
stay safe
